This site gives good insight to the services that are running on XP.  You'll find that most of them are not required and can be disabled for a more stream-lined OS for field recording.

The big recomendation around here is windows 2000.  But I run XP pro, with the opusaudioprojects.net setup and its awesome.

XP Pro is just fine....  I've been using the OS for 24@48K recording for a little more then a year now with no problems what so ever.

OK I have tweaked my OS and now it seems that my recording program does not respond as well as it sis before.  I am using Polderbits Sound Recorder.  I know this is not the best program out there, but it was cheap and it will record in 48.  I have cakewalk Home Studio 2004, but I do not know how to use it for anything but to edit recordings that I already have on my HDD.  As soon as I learn how to use it I will definately make the switch, but for now it has to the polderbits.  Can someone tell me why my lappy recording program is not working like it did prior to the tweaking.  When loading a recording it takes forever to load and when I am playing it so that I can place the track marks in it it cuts out.  I know that this cutting out will not have an effect on my final product, but it is annoying as hell.  Thanks for the input.

I would like to help you but I don't know what exactly you did to tweak your system.  If you could write down what you did maybe I or someone else might be able to help.

i can get you a cheap copy of WaveLab 5 if youd like, PM me for details. pretty easy to use, maybe itll fix the problem...also, audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net) is fine and free too.

you can also record in cdwav at 24bit.  I'm surprised nobody mentioned this already, are there reasons not to use it.  Free and easy!
