Converting shn to flac
« on: April 25, 2005, 12:03:32 PM »
i have a couple of panic shows that were once seeded in shn and i'm planning on reseeding them in flac.  the copies that were on the panic archival server were lost and given the emergence of flac in third party hardware and software, and the fact that i do not like working with shn files at all, i'm going to convert them to flac.  Has anyone used shntool to convert shn's to flac?  is the process reliable and does it create any issues?  the other option is that i used shntool to join the shn's into a long wav and was going to retrack as flacs.  but if i can just run one command line, that's obviously much easier, as long as it is reliable.

I use dbpoweramp all the time to do just this, works great -- www.dbpoweramp.com -- it's shareware, but only the mp3 conversion feature stops working after the trial period.  The one nice advantage of dbpoweramp is that it's windoze integrated and works via right mouse clicks.  No need for command line instructions, etc.

thanks, darrin, i have dbpoweramp as well, i'll check it out.  I may end up using shntool since it has such street cred among tapers and seeders.  i assume you've seen no errors introduced by this process?

Damon -- no issues at all using dbpoweramp.  I've converted hundreds of files directly from shn to flac using it.

out of curiosity, what level of compression would the resulting flac files be from either dbpoweramp or shntool?  is there a switch to set the compression level in shntool?

Don't know on shntool, but on dbpoweramp, you can choose low, medium or high -

thanks for the info, darrin.  however, after listening to the shns i have, they were originally seeded with a fade between disc 2 and disc 3, with disc 3 starting with the last few seconds of disc 2.  so i'm going to have reassemble the sets and edit out the fades before seeding.  so neither of these methods will work in this case.  thanks for the pointers though.

Sorry I caught this thread a few days late.  I always use dbpoweramp now.  It does direct bit for bit conversion of shn > flac.  Since the guts of shn and flac have now been established all dbpoweramp is is a front-end.  Why do commands lines anymore unless you use linux?

As far as FLAC compression levels are set I always use 6.  The file size difference between 6 and 9 is tiny and the time needed to compress it at 9 and not 6 was a big difference.  Try converting the same file at diferent compression level to see the difference.
