I have a new to me ua5 here and cannot get a digital signal from it either to my microtrack2 via digital coax or my d7 via optical in. It arrived with a broken usb out because it was shipped in a flimsy envelope with the usb cable still attatched. Are these 2 linked? I can get an analog signal out of the ua5. Pretty sure everything in on the correct setting...
thanks for any help

1) Are you sure it's already modded to send a signal without USB? I'm also assuming that no red light comes on in the optical slot when you feed the ua5 a signal regardless of whether the optical cable is in or not.
2) If it was modded and your willing to crack the case open, it should be readily apparent if the board or connectors were chewed on. I refitted my optical connector into it's socket slot on a Sony MD player because the analog outs were crushed during shipping and were right next door.

So the ua5 needs to be modified to send optical or coax signal out?
If so why are those outputs there from the factory?

Yes, it needs to be modified to use the optical or coax outputs in "standalone" mode, i.e. without a computer hooked up. Those outputs exist, in stock form, so one may play back/monitor from the computer: computer > USB > UA5 > coax/optical out.
If you're a DIY type, or know someone who is, there are instructions around somewhere for how to do the mod yourself.
Edit to add: UA5 digi-mod instructions (http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,5209.0.html)
Edit to add again: alternatively, you could send it to Busman Audio to have it modded (if he's still modding UA5s).

Yep it'll only work stock with usb hooked up to computer.

i've done a few digi mods to these, and would be happy to do another ...or walk you through it via PMs or email or something
