Mini-XLRs on a PS-2/Phantom power modded AT943s
« on: July 30, 2004, 03:17:37 PM »
Stealthed my first show last night.  Used some AT943s that have been modded to accept phantom power, however,  I don't have a small phantom power box so I reverted back to the battery box.  Recording is nice but I can tell that the bass does overpower them a bit so I would like move to a PS-2.  If I could get a PS-2 modded to have mini-xlrs could I bypass using the Samson PM4 power adapters or are they required when using these modded mics?

how would you be able to bypass the 48v adapters? unless i'm misunderstanding...

I'm trying to figure out if the power adapters doing anything besides change the connection from a mini-xlr to regualr XLR?  Do they drop the 48v down to a lower voltage?

 ;)
i think that's why they're called power adapters.

Only thing I can find is that they change the impedence from high to low.  Nothing about dropping the volts.

I still haven't quite got it figured out in my head, but I believe yes, there is a series of resistors inside the AT8533/PM4 adapters, which probably drops the voltage down.  I wish someone with EE experience would chime in here.  I've started a multitude of threads regarding the checking of voltage on this adapter as well as the DPA equivelant(sp?) for the 4060 line.  My gear was effectively stolen for 2 weeks and then I have been out of the country for another so I remain unable to test it at this time.

you need the power adaptors to provide phantom to the AT mics. if you want to make your setup smaller, you could take the innards of the Samson adaptors and put them INSIDE of the PS-2 (if there's room) and replace the XLR input of the PS-2 with mini-XLR connections.

The BFFT 7-28-2004 is pretty damn sweet.
Right on Vic W. topping them once or twice, but he's a strong player and is featured in the mix.
P48 should help.  Do you think that card caps may have limited the bass, as well ?

I think that I like these enough to add them to my FOB arsenal.
So small, yet so clean.

AT943s and a pair of TLs and I'm set for a while.

Back to the recording, and a little microphonic dreaming............      :D

+T for posting the recording !

Problem is finding someone who would/can do it.  I would love to get it done though.  I'm definately gonna go PS-2 to replace the battrey box but PS-2 + power adapters is gonna be more bulky than just the battery box.

Ya that rig is a bit bulky but Ive been stelthing with it myself for a month and its worth the extra size night and day sound qualtiy to the batt box..and ya the omni AT's are very bass sensitive and the ps-2 will help very much  and dont try to bypass the adapters I lost a cap in that experiment already.

I just recorded a buch of stuff using my Un-mod AT933s > PS-2 > AD-20 > JB3 over the weekend and the sound is great. It was up close at some really loud shit in a very small space (see my Duo Buggin pics in Rig Pictures). The mics didn't clip or distort at all that I could tell, but I was hitting the minimum gain of the AD-20 a little. It clipped with the gain turned all the way down, but only a tiny bit on percussion spikes. It's not audible, but I saw it in the JB3 levels and again in CE2k. I'm not too worried since that was one of the loudest shows I've ever taped and the mics performed very well.

If you want phantom power with mini XLRs and a preamp/ad all in one I'd look at the Core Sounds Mic 2496. If I had the money to spare I'd go that route for sure. I'll be interested to hear about what you come up with too. Good luck!

Calling AT8533 owners with a well stocked toolbox & a digital camera (hint hint).. .

I always(?) see the AT8533 and the Samson PM-4 mentioned as "equals".

Is this justified? Can anyone out there confirm that the internals of the AT8533 (to me a totally unknown unit) in any way are like the internals of the Samson PM-4?

Thanks!

it's not justified, but they hold the same application
