which brings me to my next question, is windows 2000 less of a"resource-hog" than XP? I'm looking to maximize performance...

my understanding is that win2k is less resource intensive than xp.  it is also preferred for recording than xp. there is some documentation for optimizing win2k performance when recording and doing DAW on the Oade website:

The answer to both of your questions is yes.

Pretty good price, and a top notch OS.

you could install this stuff over a dell (inspiron 600m) with xp already installed, right - just do a install that reformats everything, right..?

pretty much yes. I put the installation disc in the cd-rom and reboot. My computer will quickly flash something like "press enter to boot from disc" so I hit enter, it should give you options like reformatting etc. etc.

+t's to everyone else, thanks for your responses

If you already have XP installed and you have the disk space available there are also ways to install both Win2K and XP on the same machine...you'll get a choice as to which one you want when you boot up.

FWIW 2K is less stable than XP, but XP does have more background programs running.  I'd just advise you to NEVER GO ONLINE with your dedicated recording/editing pc and don't install anything that you're not going to use and you should be fine.
Really not very evil at all now...
