Title: Matrix question??
Post by: Gary Hull on August 18, 2003, 01:12:57 PM
I am pretty sure that this is possible, but I was hoping to get some information on how to do it.  I was thinking of trying to make a matrix of a recent Yonder show I taped.  I have both a copy from the SBD and a copy from my mics, the question is how do I do it???

I have Sound Forge 5.0 as my editing software, is it possible to use SF or do I need some other editing software.

Thanks for any help you can give.

I thought soundforge only worked for 2 channels?  I know for sure n-track can do it..  you're going to get into time delay probs..  you'll have to offset either the sbd. or the mic source in order to time align them.

Yuck...that sounds pretty hard to get it right.  I like to listen to it and play with it.  And time alignment would be pretty tough.  Two different sources can drift away from each other.  It's nice to see this.

I've had good results with Cool Edit Pro in multitrack.  You can see them both, time align them, play with levels of each source and listen without having to commit to pasting.

I prefer to use SoundForge Vegas Audio.

I don't know if this is how most people do it but I take one source (say the SBD) and open as one big file. Then I take the other source (AUD) and chop it up into tracks (with something like CD Wave) and then paste each track on top of the SBD source. That way it's easy to keep things lined up. All you have to do is zoom in a lot and match up the waveforms. I can have a whole show done in about 20 minutes.

Good luck. I tape all my shows (that allow SBD patches) this way and I've been VERY satisfied with the results.

when you paste it, does it do a mix 50/50 or does it overwrite the selection?

With Vegas you can change the levels of each source to whatever you want. It starts out 50/50. From there you can add the volume envelope to whatever track you want to boost or lower.

Its really easy.

use cool edit pro.  I am using it right this second aligning a matrix of ulu with my mics on-stage.  Any way to maipulate percentage of mix.  I was thinking I want more stage than I do sbd...BTW, anyone else notice that cool edit pro is now an adobe product!   Makes cracking a little more difficult!

Yeah, i use Cool Edit Pro as well... how much do you change the balance between the aud and sbd??  I just drop the SBD down .5 to 1.5 dB to make it sound a bit more full.  how do you mix it - just looking for someone elses story...
