Yeah, my brevity didn't help. Stage-lip or onstage are my limits. Even half way to the front at proper triangulation, if I'm still taping stacks, I would reach for hypers indoors. It's only when I'm interested in the stage-lip or on stage that I'd change that.
I actually like the tighter pattern not for people rejection, but reflection rejection. Thats why I went for a generalized indoor/outdoor, cut out some of the ceiling/wall bounce reverb.
