FOB: ck 63 or ck 61?
« on: February 13, 2014, 04:28:10 AM »
I have a pair of 63s and am soon getting a pair of 61s; was wondering whats best to run FOB. I'm running 480 bodies into a Mini Me. Just wondering what works better indoors at a theatre. I lean towards hyper/63s. Thanks for your input.

If you are really close. Cards for sure. 50ft plus in a crowded ROM go hypers. In a good sounding room it really won't matter to much though.

My vote would be for which ever ones you prefer.  I assume most people will say cards (except for maybe Bean  ;)) but from my one anecdotal experience 63s way FOB sound great.

my rule of thumb; cards outdoors, hypers indoors.

In a good theater at about the 16th row or so I run cards, after that it goes either way. The mini me makes either cap sound good so you can't really lose.
I know you like, tape for people's approval and stuff, and wave your tapes around like they're your dick...  but even you can't actually think section tapes from philips sound good.

One size doesn't fit all.

If you're running on-stage or close (first ten rows), cards.   Beyond that, hypers.  I find my cards are getting less and less of a workout these days.  :)

A lot of this, as has been mentioned, is trial and error and what you think/like.  There is no magic 8-ball for this one.

I say whatever you like overall
I have run 63 on a stack and 61 in the back
I run both sets all the time so its not like I need to pick but the sound isn't that different on them IMO
In fact 99% of the time I like the 63 better no matter where I am at
Mics - AKG ck61/ck63 (c480b & Naiant actives), SP-BMC-2
XLR Cables - Silver Path w/Darktrain stubbies
Interconnect Cables - Dogstar (XLR), Darktrain (RCA > 1/8) (1/8 > 1/8), and Kind Kables (1/8f > 1/4)
Preamps - Naiant Littlebox & Tinybox
Recorders - PCM-M10 & DR-60D

This.  I've also found that to be more often the case than not.  There is a certain sound with the 63's that is sweet.

Yeah, my brevity didn't help. Stage-lip or onstage are my limits. Even half way to the front at proper triangulation, if I'm still taping stacks, I would reach for hypers indoors. It's only when I'm interested in the stage-lip or on stage that I'd change that.

I actually like the tighter pattern not for people rejection, but reflection rejection. Thats why I went for a generalized indoor/outdoor, cut out some of the ceiling/wall bounce reverb.

The room makes all the difference...here is a sample of Cards...behind the SNB way behind the top of a Equilateral Triangle of the Stacks...hypers would have done nothing for this pull...

This one has as many answers as do the combinations of colours available when one sees a rainbow.  :)

There is no one-size fits all answer.  As mentioned, it depends on the room and where you have to set up.  In some cases, it's preference; in other cases, your set-up location will be the determining factor.
