soundboard-ua-5-jb3
« on: June 02, 2005, 10:41:48 PM »
Ok, I want to make a soundboard recording tomorrow night and want to make sure all my setting are straight.

 * UA-5:  LO-z, Digital?, 44.1, Stereo, adv off, coaxial? RCA cables from soundbord into rca in, use input in volume knob for level.

 * jb3:    use the digital out from the ua-5 into optical in of jb3, source - optical in,

Thanks,

Brian

It was hard for me to understand your post, but here goes:

1. I'm assuming it's a digi-mod UA-5

2. SBD > Outputs (could be a variety of types depending on the board*) > RCA In on UA5 > Optical Out On UA5 > JB3 Optical In.

* Recently I've needed: 1/4" to RCA , RCA to RCA, and even Mini to RCA on very rare occasions to take a SBD feed.

Hope that helps,
MIKE B

I know it's hard to read.  Basically, Do I use the digital or analog option on the ua-5?  Also, do I switch it to coaxil or optical on the back of the ua-5.  Thanks.

Use the analog source option and switch it to optical since you're using an optical cable  :P

Easiest way to do this, since I find the original post confusing - here're the settings with which you should concern yourself:

  • Set REC SOURCE to Analog
  • Set ADV switch OFF (16-bit;  ON = 24-bit)
  • Set Sample Rate to your desired SR (in this case, 44.1 kHz)
  • RCA outputs from SBD into RCA inputs 3/4 on the rear of the unit
  • Adjust levels using the rear Input Volume knob
do I switch it to coaxil or optical on the back of the ua-5.
and switch it to optical since you're using an optical cable :P

The coax / optical switch determines which digital input the UA-5 should utilize.  You're not using a digital input in this case, so it doesn't matter to which position the switch is set.

Before I got my my UA5 Warm-modded, I used to use the 1/4" TRS inputs on the front from the SBD.  I had 2 XLR>RCA cables and I bough RCA>1/4"TRS adapter plugs.  THis allowed me better access and better level adjustment - bigger knobs on front, right and left.

However, the Warm Mod PLus disabled the 1/4" inputs...

Everything Brian said above but have the ADV switch and the sampling rate set before you power up the UA-5.  And if you change one of those settings, power cycle it or the change won't take effect.

The rear inputs offer more attenuation, which is often needed for soundboard source.  Otherwise you may find yourself at the lowest setting and still going over.

i like having the 1/4" inputs...sucks they are disabled when you get a mod.

i pulled a board tape with my ua5 this weekend.  for part of the second set i left the monitor button on, on the front of the unit b/c it automatically is on when the unit is powered up. (nothing to do with the becks i was drinking).

my question is, does it being on affect my recording at all?  i couldn't find the point in the set where i turned it off, fwiw, but i didn't listen very closely yet to the recording.

thanks ~
tim

I've also left mine on a few times and I havent noticed any difference at all.  Just my experience w/ it.

The monitor button on digi-mods will effect the analog output.  Go read the UA5 FAQ for a better answer...  But for digital use, it makes no differnce at all.

personally of the 8 or so boards i have done the last few months all but one have been the board matrix out (XLR) so XLR to RCA is most definitly not out of the question and IMHO is much more likely than a mini or RCA out provided the board isnt a piece of crap......
