UA-5 vs. PS-2+AD-20?
« on: August 21, 2005, 11:27:22 PM »
So I've just agreed to buy an unmodded UA-5 from someone here in town. Got a great deal on it.   :D

Wondering which people think is a better Pre/AD, the stock UA-5 or my current one?

I usually tape stealth BTW.

Thanks in advance!

yeah, that's kinda what I'm thinking.  If I can swallow holding onto both I might, but do you think that the UA-5 is that much better sounding that it's worth losing the portability of the Denecke gear?

well, I guess I can save it for Matrixing shows and shows that allow taping, or I'm sure I can find someone on here who wants one.

+T for your input!

what ya looking to get for it?  I'm asking cause I'm searching for a STOCK ua-5 to practice some mods I've been working on but it's gotta be cheap ya know cause it"s just practice...  I don't want a unit for more than $100.00 or so..

let me know.  I understand if it's a no way.

Has anyone ever looked into changing the op-amps on the ad20?  I've always liked the ad20 but when compared to a ua5 (and other stuff, of course)  it sounds a little bright and thin.  Sure would be nice if someone could come up w/ a warm-mod for it if it hasn't been done so already.

i think the stock ua5 sounds better but you can't shove it down your pants.

You sure about that?  ;) I've gotten mine in the way many a times.

sorry Krispy, it's not THAT cheap.  I haven't even picked it up yet. I get at 7pm tonight.  Never been used outside of the guy's home, so it should be in good shape.  I'll probably play with it for a month or two before I decide whether to  put it up in the yardsale or not.

no problem man,  a man's gotta ask.  I missed a few on ebay for right around the $100.00 mark and I've been kickin myself ever since.  I want to try a couple of mods I've been thinking about and don't want to spend $250.00+ just to ruin a peice of good gear. (I don't actually think I'm gonna ruin anything but just in case ya know)

make it fun,
Kris

i had a ad-20 and now have a ua-5
the ad-20 i think would be safer to stealth in the aspect that the knobs are smaller, don't turn as easy, and the power is on with the battery in
the ua-5 you could tyurn it off fairly easy in a stealth situation i think

i havn't used my ua-5 yet but based on many peoples opinions it will give a better sound then the ad-20
i loved my ad-20 and the mian reason i got rid of it for thw ua-5 was because i wanted one box to run instead of 2--thats a plus to running the ua-5 stealth though imo

It's a mostly discrete design I think.  There are a pair of TLC 2272 opamps in there but I guess we'd have to understand what they do before replacing them!
