I would say the time frame on the D6 is accurate. i would bet circa 1981-1982 on the first versions of the WM-D6C. However, I did not see a D3 before late 1987 into 1988. I seriously doubt there was a D3 in 1983, but I could be wrong.

take a look at: http://www.pocketcalculatorshow.com/walkman/walkman-db.html

I know that I bought a WM-D6 in November 1982 and the Dolby C model (WM-D6C) followed after. The WM-D3 was definitely later than both 6 models.

D3 came out circa late 1987

The first confirmed live tape I've seen done with the D3 was on 4/4-87:

Maybe that was a seed model, out early.
From July 87 onwards, there are plenty of live tapes out. Google is your friend...

I got my Sony WMD6C new in 1986 and still going strong !! I think I read somewhere that the WMD6C came on the market in 1985.

I had a WM-D3 as early as April 87..in Fact it was my first "Professional" recorder.  Ditched that thing about 6 months later when I bought my Marantz PMD430 and a D6C for stealth.

The first tape I've seen with the D6C is this one:

I bought my first D6 in early 1983
that, along with the next 2 crapped out fast
Sony kindly kept replacing them (how nice)
when my third one crapped out they replaced it with a D6C
that was in early 1984 and was one of the first D6Cs
it was at that time that I bought a D5 as my main deck
I got rid of the D6C right after the Red Rocks shows in September 1985
I was letting a friend use it for the shows because his D6 had also crapped out

I saw a few D3s around, but don't remember when since I really wasn't interested in them
