Must stop buying DAPs
« on: January 08, 2019, 03:54:45 PM »
So I really skimped on PB gear when I was taping 30+ shows a year with travel. So it was either the rig or PB. I’ve quit the travel and can afford decent PB. I built a modest but solid system of vintage gear, and picked up a fiio x3. Thought it was the greatest thing ever. But I wanted a streaming player so plunked down for the bottom of the line AK player, the C10 from Activo. Blew me away at first buta over a few months really limited soundstage and detail. So I pickup a Pioneer dpx 30r and it crushes the CT10. Which I can hardly listen to now. And I know in time I’ll hear limitations of the Pioneer and will want an upgrade.

This is as bad as my crazy taping gear swapping. No end in site on DAPs. Probably makes more sense to pickup something like the Brooklyn streaming DAC. The ears are fickle things.😬😁

Consider getting a Raspberry Pi.  They're dirt cheap, and they can satisfy the itch to tweak things because you can customize them to a great degree.

i generally just go NAS >DAC > AMPs > Ears

I also have way too much playback gear for a 3 bedroom home but what are ya gonna do

you might look at a NAS if you dont have one. They may have a lot of the streaming options you might be looking for. I know my plex server added support for those high res files you mentioned in another thread a while back.

Even a modest Tablet will serve as a good bit-bucket before an DAC>pre>amp  (my new home system, waiting for the DAC to be finished)

But having 24/192 with a decent enough amp to show them off in my shirt pocket as a "cigarette pack-sized" DAP makes me giddy.
My 2.5mm balanced headphone cables just came in from South Asia where some kind soul wove (weaved?) them for me.
Rolling them in for the next week to see if it matters

So do you think my crush on the DAP will last until St. Patrick's Day ?
