quality, small, AFFORDABLE preamp for njb3
« on: October 06, 2004, 04:55:42 PM »
Hey -  I got a jb3 to record my band's practices and gigs.  I am using a R0de NT4 mic.  I need a good quality, but AFFORDABLE, preamp - any recommendations?  I know that people talk alot about the UA-5, but they are $300.  I am just looking for an option for a preamp that isnt gonna be too expensive.  I am going to record mainly small venue gigs - bars, small clubs, small outside shows, etc.
Bass Rig:

Modulus - Korg DR1 - CAE 4X4
Channel 1:  CAE 4x4 - ADA PreAmp - Decmeter Tube PreAmp - Meyer UX-1 - Meyer EQ - Meyer CQ2
Channel 2:  CAE 4x4 - Boss OC3/Meatball/CAE 150.1 - Eventude 4000
Channel 3 - Decmeter  Tude Direct - CAE 150.1 - SWR 400 - SWR Goliath

Look into the Samson Mixpad 4. Its a little mixer that is powered by 3 9 volt batteries. They can be had for under 100 usally. I like a lot of the tapes I made with mine...

Alex - thanks.  You are a pittsburgher, huh?  So am I - I am friends and bandmates with Shane (anodyne33)  I will look into the Samson Mixpad.  I just want something that will boost my mic signal!

Yeah, shane digs alt country, but we arent an alt country band.  We are a "jamband" (generic term, but I really dont know how else to describe it.)

I used the Sound Professionals pre with the NJB3 for a while.  Works fine until you get something better.

another option is the denecke ad20 -- there's one on the yardsale site listed at $250 obo. The advantage of both the ua5 and ad20 is that they feed a digital signal to the jb3 and thereby avoid all of the jb3's internal electronics and merely use the jb3 as a data storage device.
