I prefer +.
Some like - better for older compatibility with dvd players.
Most players built in the last 3 years should have no problems with a +.
FWIW , my + discs play in my friends players...

suite, it will mainly be for trying to organize my music collection, having 8.5GB on each dual-layer disc is a great advantage for that

so since the + burns twice as fast, i'll most def go that route :)

anybody have experience w/ iomega dvd burners? especially the external ones ;)

thanks,

hey bean, just to let you know, 8x dvd burning vs 8x cd burning is completly different.  dvd burning is much faster.  i burn a single layer dvd-r at 2x in 30 mins.  thats 4.7gbs in 30 minutes, you can't write 4.7gbs to cdrs in 30 mins.  its different, i don't know how to explain it, but just believe me that its different.

also, i've yet to see any dvd media that is 8x-16x that is reletively cheap and dual layered stuff is even more.  i've also found +r media to be more abundant in stores like best buy, but the normal price is usally more expensive then -r.  also, -r works in everything, +r works in select things.  if you're just using them as data disc and not backing up movies, it really shouldn't matter cuz your dvd burner will read anything...but i'd stick to -r for videos.  thats just me tho...and most people that post on www.dvdrhelp.com agree.

also, i'd never burn a dvd at 16x, but thats just me.  i'd prefer to have a quality burn over a fast burn.  i won't go over 4x, and for important stuff i stick at 2x.

maybe i'm just paranoid tho.

yeah, i dont think speeds really matter because its ending digital 1's and 0's, BUT the chance for errors is more likely that way :)

im just happy to finally be able to back stuff up, and burn some dvd's for myself to watch :)

now i gotta get dvdx copy

i only use -r at 2x cause thats my only choice but im happy w/ it. no coasters and they work in everyone's players. you dont need either software. i use to use dxd xopy for copywrited stuff, but all you have to do is copy and paste the 2 ts files on to your hd and burn as data. works for me. ymmv.

yeah, with dvd shrink you can either rip the dvd to an iso file or a video_ts file.  load up nero > make video dvd > drag the contents from your ripped video_ts file to the video_ts file in nero...and burn.

pay no attention to the audio_ts folder.  thats for making dvda's so that folder should be empty at all times.

i prefer to use dvd_shrink when ripping dual layer movies, so i can ditch everything but the main movie. so compression is kept to an absolute minimum

me too, with dvd shrink if you want the whole dvd, you can compress the hell out of the title menus and extras, leaving the main movie pretty much untouched.  which is what i always do.  also you can pick what audio you want, suptitles, etc.  i usually rip out all the subtitles and just leave in englinsh 5.1 or english dts for audio.  which saves a lot of room...rather than having 3-4 different audio tracks for the same movie.

95% of the time, i dont rip extra or anything, just the main movie and thats it. i rarely watch extra/preview type stuff, and if i do, il watch it on the original, and once is more than enough for that stuff

very easy, just click re-author tab. and then choose what you want. i just drag and drop the main movie and only burn it.

99% of the time it will be just one main movie (and it will tell you its the main movie) but once in awhile i find em that have 2 parts to the main movie.

easy as cake
