Newbie here :help: Bought a pair of AT897's from a friend and I'm looking for a set of complimentary mics to go with. Still trying to figure out if I need omni or cardioids? What's a good beginner mic to go with?
-
Personally, I would get the cardioids. I've owned the AT897s and made some good tapes, but the cardioids will always be useful where the shotguns will either be good or not IMO.
Omnis are useless in 95% of the situations I tape in (indoor, small to mid sized venues)

Seconded. Cards are a good anchor in most situations.

Thank you! Do you have a favorite cardioid?

Hate to be that guy, but what's your budget? Lol

I’m not too worried about a budget. Just want nice gear :headphones:

The new Austrian Audio cardioid looks very cool. I think the set is $650 or so.
Otherwise the AKG 480 or 460 with ck61 caps sound nice and can be had for around the same price or less.
Schoeps CMC1L and MK4 would be top of the line.

There ya go. All fine choices. Have a ball!
