Adjust sample rate type Vs. Convert Sample rate type
« on: February 15, 2007, 06:41:51 PM »
In the process of transfering one of my Pearl Jam masters and I ran into a problem.

I have a dat master that I had to switch from SP(16/48) to LP(16?12?/32) mode to get the whole show.

want to end up 16/44.1 for BT/CD

How do I get them to stop sounding like chipmunks?

when i select the portion of the wave file and "convert sample rate type" it still sounds high pitched

when i select the wave file and "adjust sample rate type" it sounds fine but the rest of the show is slower now.

I am using:
adobe audition 2.0

sorry for the noob question.
I did a search and didn't come up with anything.

also should I:
Normalize?Hard limit?Amplify?Release as is?

thanks in advance

If I understand correctly, you were recording to DAT at 16-bit / 48 kHz and switched mid-recording to (let's assume for now) 16-bit / 32 kHz.

I'd split the file at the moment you switch from 48k to 32k, process each file separately (downsampling 48k to 44.1k, upsampling 32k to 44.1k via Convert Sample Type), then re-join the files.

If you're -not- going to do any additional edits, it's okay to perform the Convert Sample Type function at 16-bit resolution (Audition will perform the operation at 32bfp and then internally dither down to 16-bit automatically).

If you -are- going to do any additional edits, you should perform the Convert Sample Type function on each file at 32bfp, complete any additional editing, and then finally dither down to 16-bit.

I usually do one of two things...

1)  Record two files.  Since the recording sofware on your compute rlocks into a smaple rate, just make one recording of the first part of the show, and another one for the second part of the show.  Convert them, individually to 44.1, then rejoin.
 Or...

2)  Re-record through analog cables.  Not the best scenario, but sometimes that LP mode, which is 12 bit 32 khz, can throw sofware for a loop.

Hope that helps,

try seperating the two sample rates into two file. the first will be proper and the second will be chipmunked. Take the chipmonked file and change the header info to 32k. This should allow the file to play at the proper speed. then if you resample it to 44.1k it should work right. I use "soundhack" for my header needs. I think it is availibe for both mac and pc. I'm a mac.

Take the chipmonked file and change the header info to 32k.

Some applications like Bias' Peak allow you to change the sample-rate inside the app. You can do this, without converting. Others don't so you have to modify the header (technically all Peak is doing is modifying the header, but without going in and actually making any modifications).
