Topic: Sturdy Festival Mic Stand

I have a FOB & Med Stand.  I am looking to get a STURDY TALL stand for festival season.  Any suggestions?

my 13ft manfrotto works just fine, tipped with an umbrella and staked down.

which by the way are around 115 on b&h I looked when I seen the other 13' stand for sale here.

Once you choose a stand, secure it with a ground auger.

Sold as 'heavy duty stakes' in the camping department.  Just like the screw in dog chain anchors.  Cinch the stand's leg x-bars down firmly to it with a strap (not a flexing bungee) and you're rock solid.

I like my AEA 15 footer
Not too heavy and collapses down to just over 3 feet.
not air cushioned or with fancy locking mechanisms but it was (is) my first stand and has never let me down

Just to clarify, I am down with securing the stand and all that.  I am just lookin for suggestions on model numbers of Heavy Duty stands.  Something that can handle the winds and weight of several sets of mics.

Seconded for the A.E.A. stand.  Goes up to 15' and is a tank.  Expensive, but worth it; it's the only stand you will ever need for outdoor / open taping.  I think that Sonic Sense still sells them for like $175 new; I picked mine up for $100 used.

I have the shure S15A.  It is sturdy, but I hate the twist grip things.

I want to get steel.  From an engineering standpoint steel is 3 times as heavy as aluminum, but it's 3 times as strong and 3 times as stiff, which means your mics don't bob around in the wind, which I think might help with wind phasing.  Then I'll get my 20 year old friend to lug it for me.

Karl (wheres_jerry) has some big old beast of a stand he bought cheap off ebay.  Dynatron or something like that, probably 17' for $17, and it weights 17pounds and barely fits in trunk of my sentra.

My cheapo big aluminum stand (can't remember the make) flexes a good bit with heavy LD mics, but isn't too bad if I don't extend the topmost small diameter section and extend the others moderately, leaving a few inches in each instead of maxing any one of them to the stops.  That leaves enough tube inside each section connection to stiffen it significantly.

Unfortunately, if the wind is gusting enough to sway your stand, it's also shifting the sound moving though that gusting air so much that you'll still get phasing even if you clamped to Eiffel's lightstand.

If budget is not really a consideration, check with the folks at American Photographic Instrument Co (APIC but their website is http://www.x-tendtechnologies.com/  cause apic.com was taken). They can custom make pretty much anything you desire whether total overall length, collapsed length, number of sections or fitting size is most important to you. Some speculation on gearslutz that they made the Shure stands at one time but appear not to at the present.
