Title: V2>ADC-20 vs V3 vs **MixPre**
Post by: Uncle Jimmy on July 19, 2004, 10:56:36 AM
Kids,

I was thinking about upgrading (MBHO 603a's are my mics) my V@ to a V3, but don't have too much feedback on the switch. Is there any reason not to do it?

I figure i could get about 1/2 way or more toward a new V3 by selling the V2 and ADC20.

Any thoughts for your favorite uncle?

-UJ

edit 7/21 - now i want to know if the MixPre is as good as the now discontinued MP-2........ might sound nice with my MBHO mics...

That's what I'll be doing when I get the scratch...be nice to just have one device. Go for it! :)

the v3 is very natural and picks up what is sent to it, so if you like the way your mics sound, then unleash them in all their glory w/ a v3 :)

that said, you wouldnt necessarily want ANY mics going into a V2/V3.
1 of the reasons I sold my V2 was that I didnt like the brightness of the TLs with the transparency of the V2...I needed something warmer on the pre-end.
I look at MBHOs as the small diaphragm older brother of the TLs...both are "brite" mics.

I can't imagine how brite a MBHO >V2> ADC20 recording would be...for some reason(to my ears) that just sounds overly brite.
I bet a MBHO> MiniME combo would be nice and fat sounding!

fwiw i actually love my TL>V2 combo.  i also throw in a modsbm1 into the mix to smooth things out a little. go with what your ears like!  I'm definitely heading down to the TL>V3 route in the future!

yeah, the SBM-1 does warm things up.

the mod sbm does, a straight sbm1 sounds nothing like the mod. it is bright and thin...

mbho>v2>adc20 would be uber bright, a minime would certainly be the right decision.  but
with the original question, go V3, you'll never go wrong

There was a recent Gordon show BT'ed with MBHO -> v3 source.
I think the tape sounds very nice.
as of this posting, there are still 20 seeders connected.  Hop on and give it a listen:

...unless you like bright tapes. Bean had it right, as long as you like your mics' sound, that's what you'll hear with a V3...

I have run c422>V2>adc20 and C422>v3 and the a/d stage of the v3 is sooooooooo much better that it's not even funny. I too thought that the v2 may be giving me too much detail but after running the v3- I realized that the adc20 just put a really edgey brightness on all that detail. Now with just the v3- the detail is a beautiful thing

with the mbho's I would also say mini-me, but then again, I loved the V2/modsbm-1 combo I ran back when I had those same mics. Its all in what your ears like.

check the archive.org if u want to hear some samples.  i really like the mbho > v3 combo, i've downloaded a few recordings done by a guy here in iowa city....search his name on archive.org (Eric Foelske) and check out some of those shows and see if u like the combo yourself.

I like my MBHO>V3 tapes but I don't think I've heard any MBHO>mme recordings. Are there many out there? Seems a lot folks speculate it would sound great!  ;)

there are a good amount out there with v2>mme and staight mme up on the archive.
i contemplated buying some 603's and went to the archive for samples, just search for
603 and you'll find some mme lineages in there, at least 7-10
