Topic: what are you using to stealth?

so ive done a couple stealth recordings, a few times with core sounds stealth mics > d8 and once with my skm140s >mme >d8
the core sounds tapes sucked but very low key and the skm 140 tapes smoked but not very low pro, looking to invest in a pre and ad strictly for stealthin'....... we have a amazing foundation here in slc called GAM they put on a jazz series every winter and this years line up smokes joey defransesco, pat metheny, wynton marsalis, etc. and these all need to get taped interested in what are you guys/gals using?

An MP2 would fit your needs.  I stealth the 140's with it, into an M1, with favorable  results.

mp2, psp-2, sax are all some small pre's you could easily stealth w/.  also have you checked out jk labs stuff?

The Aerco MP-2 is built for stealthing!  Small black box.  No lights.  Runs off 3 internal 9V.  Sounds great!

tonight, i stealthed with this rig:  ak40>lc3>km100>mv100>m1.  ak40 were mounted in my hat > lc3 > km100 directly into the mv100 > m1.  very doable and the results were sweet.

I have no problem stealthing w/ my ak40's...I did Dylan AK40">M148>D7 and Bonnie Raitt w/ 40's>MME>D7  both in a very small place.  Want smaller....DPA>SX2....psp-2 or 3 are small too.

How do you like the sound of it?  I also run the micros but through a Shure FP24, which is a very colorful pre. 

I’ve done one show with it so far, Aimee Mann a week and a half ago, the tape came out sweet! The best sounding show I’ve taped so far.

No unfortunately the micros are super power hungry, I made a battery pack to run with it. From my testing I’d say that’s pretty accurate with normal mics. It ran about 50 mins before the low battery LED came on using a nine volt, the low batt light on the ps2 comes on immediately when you plug the mics in.


One note the pre amp is noisier than the ad20 preamp at high levels, if your going to use it for very quiet acoustical music you may want to use something else.

Stealthing a V3 and 6v battery is easy if there isn't a heavy pat-down.  Pat-down, well...while some people might be able to get away with it, I don't think I'd be able to manage it.

Slim 3-pocket/section fanny pack - SLA in one side pocket, D100 on the other, V3/mic bodies in the middle.  No pat-down, no problem.

Tell me about it.  I just picked up that walmart batt today.  Charged it up and connected for a test, just to see how long it'd last.  I'm at 2 1/2 hours and it still shows a full charge.  This thing is awesome!

my current stealth rig is 4022 > mp2 > d100, but i've yet to try the combination out.  when i had my 140s i ran ak40s > lc3ka > km100 > mp2 > d100 and the combination sounded pretty good when i didn't screw something else up.    i'll have to admit i don't miss fussing around with the bodies, they were kind of a pain in the ass.

easiest is the old "false bottom" of my backpack.  v3 & battery in the bottom covered with a thin layer of foam and black fabric that matches the backpack lining.  Throw a rain jacket or some other b.s. on top.  works for light pat downs where they merely look into the bag.  just had to do this a few months back for a festival in Philly.

believe it or not, I've crotched one a few times, too.  actually it was a v2 back then.  baggy pants, lycra shorts.

i heard if you call grace they will walk you though on how to re-calibrate it to a 6V.  i should look into this.  wouldn't mind investing in a stealth rig in the future and it would be sweet to use my V2!

Yup, as for the MIC 2496 having great meters, nothing beats the meters in a mixpre or mp2, they are even visible in direct sunlight...

Here is my current set up.  The only part I do not like is the Hosa XLR to stereo mini cable.  I am talking to JKLabs about getting the MPS6010 moded with a permanent pigtail mini (you can't see it, it is in the outside mesh pocket).  I use a block of foam between the modSBM and M1 to prevent them from having a frottage session.  The REI fanny is really thin, just under 2 inches thick when it is all zipped up....a bit bulkier with all the bits and pieces in there.  I can get it around my belly under a slightly baggy tee shirt and sneak it in, but I rarely have to do that.  WHen the Sonosax is added to the mix, I wear the modSBM and M1 in the SBM pleather case low near my abdomen....the Sax goes in the REI pack and I got wires going everywhich way between the two.

Stealthwise I'm running CS Binaurals>Battery Box>D100.

I'm on my 2nd pair of active cable mics, and have yet to attempt stealthing a show with them. I envy those folks that sneak in Schoeps, Sonosax, MME, and a deck...I can't imagine doing that. Hell, I was nervous enough just throwing a battery box into the mix.

Ran my new gear stealth for the first time last week (AT853rx>PS-2>AD-20>JB3).  Fairly high security situation (no bags allowed in the venue), which made life a bit tough.  Managed to get it all in though.  Quite happy with the way things turned out, though the JB3 is hard to read in low light and the AD-20 has no meters.  I guess practice will help me in that respect.

Any opinions on the difference in sound quality between the PS-2>AD-20 and the MP-2 w/o A/D converter?

I'll give it another go at the Peter Gabriel show tomorrow methinks.

-some noticeable  phasing
-some channel inbalance

I guess the phasing might be bacause the mics were on my shirt and maybe too low (I was in the 5th row)? Or maybe I was moving too much?
The channel inbalance is because I was too far stage right. I tried to fix it in Adobe Audition, but maybe could have done a bit more...

yeah, well, it's hard, but it can be done. i do it when i must. i bucked the mosh pit all night tonight - people flying in from the front and sides at static-x in a tiny sold-out club - yet i kept my head from turning. it shifted from side to side with my body (up to a few inches) when i got slammed but that happened only a few times when i just couldn't prevent it. if you brace yourself correctly, you can stand up to some pretty strong attacks... you just have to want it. and then you have a magnificent tape.
true, using omnis in the pit will help if you get run into. if your head turns with directional mics, you're truly fucked. with omnis, you're not so fucked. still fucked, because you can hear it on the tape, but it's not as bad.

Haha! Those are the times when you are not only the mic stand, but the shockmounts as well.

I have yet to stealth with my AT853 cards, but I have been in those situations with the CSB's.
