DIY microphone power supply / pre amp
« on: July 08, 2004, 02:17:48 AM »
Hi there, I've only just bought my first pair of SP-CMC-2 which I was going to use with my newly aquired $50 minidisc recorder.

I decided not to buy the SP battery box because I'd allready gone over budget and I thought I would be able to get some DIY instructions easy enough (I've learnt my lesson).

I tried out my setup last night, and I definantly need a battery box! no doubt about it, the recording was terrible! although I think the way I had the mike's at the back of my hat angled out seemed to be an easy way to get a good pickup pattern.

I've spent HOURS trying to find information on whats inside the battery boxes that supply phantom power and act as a pre amp and couldn't find anything on this board.

But I did find a site full of great links which may interest some people,
http://www.discovercircuits.com/M/mircophone.htm

Living in Australia, its not worth me paying the outragous extra shipping expense to buy a batt box from SP ($40 extra!), so I'm gonna make an effort to create one myself. Does anyone have any ideas on the best design/circuit?

Cheers,
Terry

Terry - this yahoo group is a great resource for all mic DIY stuff - battery box designs are quite basic.  You'll want to know the impedance of the mic-in on the md if you plan on building a box with bass rolloff.

Search the files section and archives for designs that get passed around.  Good luck!
