Feeding "Line In" audio to iPhone 8?
« on: December 21, 2018, 06:06:54 PM »
Blast the damn lightning connector (or really the lack of a 3.5mm jack)

I've spent a lot of time google searching for definitive solutions and haven't come up with anything positive. I don't really want to go the route of the Zoom iOS mics that are made to plug into the lighting port, because I have a perfectly good "tape out" port on my recorder so that I can feed a signal from high quality mics. It's just how to do that is where I'm stuck  :banging head:

Used ones on ebay are not that expensive, just makes sure it has the lightning cable included

How's the sound quality on that? I'm familiar with their guitar products and they are pretty low end.

it's an A to D device. It takes the analog inout from the deck, converts it to digital and sends it to the iphone up to 24/48. Ive been using them to stream to mixlr from a deck for three years. I also streamed for a long time using lightning connected microphones.  Depends on what you want to use it for I suppose. The quality is great for stream (streams are low quality anyways)

Cool. Thanks for the links. Crazy how difficult it’s been to find even some “maybe” solutions. One guy had a ridiculous tangle of multiple adapters and cables on his YouTube video.

I’m mainly trying to get better audio into the iPhone for either Facebook Live feeds or just taking straight video on the iPhone of the concert and having good sound to go along with it.

Sonicport looks pretty cool. I never really thought about the A to D conversion...
Out of curiosity, what lightning connected microphones have you been using?

Seems like all of this would be so much easier if apple still had the combo trs "headphone" jack. My hope was to just go 1/8" line out from the deck to 1/8" line in to the iPhone, but there's that lightning port issue now with Apple choosing to do away with the "headphone jack"

I think I have a "work around" on that .... I'll know more on Thursday. I have been studying, purchasing and trying out a LOT of iPhone iOS adapters and I am 99.9% sure that I have this figured out. I'll keep you updated.

I taped with real equipment from 79-93 and then largely stopped. In 2014 I started using an iPhone and Zoom lightning connected microphone to stream, first the IQ5 then the IQ7. I went back to full taping in 2015 and don't hand stream much any more, I use the sonicport from my deck. I have also done some mixpre-6 -> iphone streaming using a lightning to USB-a cable. I did a lot of research trying to figure out how to do the deck to iDevice thing for streaming. It's possible there are new alternatives, but the general choices have been deck to iphone via the headset port using TRRS cable, which is mono only, using an older 30 pin connected iphone microphone from Tascam which has a 1/8 inch in, or the sonicport. I gravitated towards the sonicport because I wanted it to be stereo but thats really overkill for a stream. There are now a handful of people using the sonicport. Ive run across a couple who use the headset port also

It's possible one of the devices that have been released since Apple removed the headset port, headset to lightning adapter kind of thing works, like the Belkin one, but reports are that they generally dont support audio in...

I also have D:Vice, which is a A/D device specific to DPA microphones. Its a small round device that also connects to the lightning port.

My current approach for streaming is using a 1/8” splitter to mic input and headphone output. This produces a fairly low quality stream (though maybe this is more related to mixlr potentially being in mono, does anyone know about this?).

I’m thinking about upgrading to the sonic port and using a dedicated old iPhone 5s tethered to my main phone.

There is also a sonicport VX version, which is larger and more expensive, that also allows for injecting USB power so the iPhone is powered while streaming.

I've never actually tried using the headset route so I am not sure about the quality. I do know thats mono. I also had one of the Tascam microphones but never ended up using it.

If you are just looking for a very simple solution to use a device as a line input to record / broadcast, then I suggest you should go buy an Andrea Electronics device (USB-SA) and see if that works for you. If I am not mistaken, you can connect this to an iDevice with the camera connector. The shortcomings on it is the fact that it does use plug in power, so if you are going to use it for mics + battery box, it's probably not going to work right at all since there doesn't seem to be any way possible to turn the plug in power off at all. On the other hand, if you find a "mic to line input" cable for just feeding audio from the board to broadcast through an iDevice, I believe it should work ok.

Found a used 30-pin connector version of a Blue Mikey for $11 on Reverb with an included 30-pin -> Lightning adaptor. It has a 3.5mm stereo input and has a mini-usb jack to charge the phone. Looking forward to give it a go.

I just use my laptop when I stream.  Line out of deck direct into the 1/8 jack or if I'm not also multitracking, I can go SBD>Tascam interface>USB>Laptop.
