modded mics?
« on: January 26, 2006, 05:38:30 PM »
I've been sitting back patiently looking to find my first pair of mics from the yard sale here on ts.com.
I'm wondering if there are a great number of Franken Mod Naks or AKG JW Mod AKG 460's out there or if I should reconsider? Am I waiting to find a needle in the taping haystack or are these fairly easy to find these days?
Just wondering out loud, thanks for any response.

Why modded mics? The two you mentioned sound nothing like each other.

not to mention the each one of these mods accomplish a different result.

naks become actives and the jw460's become like 480 with a vitamin shake.

oh, and they do sound different.

I've always been a big fan of the sound of AKG's period. The 4xx series seem to be the favorites around here. . . So I was thinking 480s or 460s? Thought I had it nailed down to 460s, then I read about the JW mod 460s.

I just can't seem to decide and its keeping me from pulling the trigger on anything.

And I just saw a pair of Franken Naks that sold in the yard sale for a very nice price. I'm not trying to compare the two in any way. I figured if another pair of the Franken Naks come up for sale soon (although I don't know how many pairs there are floating around), I'd grab them to use now and upgrade later.

I keep missing taping opportunities by not having any mics and its driving me crazy. I've got the taping bug bad. My local show sbd pulls are lacking something to say the least. I figure adding a set of mics for a matrix mix would be the solution. And then I would run just mics for bigger acts.

go to www.archive.org and download a bunch of shows with each. have you heard MGs?? ;)
I like the 480s much better than 460s myself, I find the stock 460s terribly bright. Though anything Mr. Williams touches turns to gold. Mod 460s sound great.

If I can offer some thoughts.  It sounds like you are more impressed with the fact that these mics are modded as opposed to what they actually sound like.   Kind of like loving a car because its the Special Edition without even taking it for a test drive.

I would tell you to get on archive.org and pull down some shows with all sorts of modded AND unmodded mics and see what you like the SOUND of.   Spending blindly on mics in the yard sale I think is a huge mistake.  If you dying to get in the game that bad or that quickly at least get into it for the sound you like and not the name or brand that any of the rest of us like.  Just because I think the 480's are the BEST DAMN SOUNDING MICS PERIOD! doesn't mean that they are right for your ears.

Good luck!

There are some Audix 1290s in the yard sale that would be a great pair of mics to start with. Sort of that AKG sound in a tiny package.

After scouring the posts, you guys all have given me plenty to think about. I'm probably too anxious to pull the trigger on a set of mics. I've taken it slow, up to now, choosing pieces that will get me what I like. It all started with my JB3 purchase. And then a custom attenuating box made by a ts.com member. Now, I've added an Oade digi-mod UA-5 and I have been searching for mics.

The problem is that I've heard so many different combinations I like.

The truth is, I'll have to go through my archived Flac files and listen to more samples.

MGs were definately on my most wanted list.
So were Neumann 184s, AKG 414 TLs, ADK 51 TLs, AKG 480s, AKG 460s.

How do you narrow down the choices when there are so many great sounding set ups?

$$$   Alot depends on what you're able to spend.  What situations are you most likely to tape in?  Venues?  Indoor or outdoor?  Open or stealth?

definitely check out those audixes.  I think you'll be quite impressed with them.  Plus its a helluva good deal.  I ran the audix mics for awhile with the ua-5 and made some stellar tapes.

Because nothing says "I have lots of money and am sort of confused as to how to spend it" like Bose.

Looks like the Audixes are gone. I'd check out Caymanreview's AKG 390 active setup that he has for sale.
