How do you label your discs?
« on: December 03, 2003, 08:25:31 PM »
I made the mistake of putting one of those cd "donut sticker" labels on one of my discs and now it skips...and I heard it isn't too good to write on the discs either.  Just wondering, how do you guys label your discs? As of now, I just slide in a slip of paper into the sleeve that the disc is in, but I'd rather label it with an Ultra Fine Point Sharpie.  Will I ruin the disc if I write on it or should I write on that clear plastic circle in the center of the disc? Stupid question? oh well.

I've been using a fine tip sharpie on the disc itself.  I haven't run into any problems with that.

there's been a lot of discussion on this, here and elsewhere.  some think the sharpie will eventually bleed thru into the data, but i doubt it.  for trading, i write on the inner ring with a superfine point, and print out the txt file.  also, some people like to label their own way.  for me, i use regular sharpie on the disc face.

I have personal experience with a sharpie wrecking discs. Granted, it took about 2 years, but they were TY discs. They were well-cared for in a binder and when I got my new hard drive this fall, I tried to copy some of them over. I had more than a few that could not be read. Because of this, I now do the fine point on the inner ring EXCLUSIVELY.

I suppose you could spring for discs with a writeable surface too.

silver surface ... I'm gonna guess no on that one :)

Sure learned the hard way on that one. Thankfully someone I uploaded to held on to it. It was a 24/96 master!

i write on the disk itself. I don't trade cdr's but if I did I'd write on the inside ring.

for myself though I have shn/flac backups of everything and if the ink leaks through I can get a replacement. it's just easier and a lot more convenient for me to write on the disk itself... none of this stuff is so rare I can't replace it if the disk gets messed up and cd's cost a dime so what's the big loss?

I’ve had a few weird experiences and a few close brushes with total weirdness of one sort or another, but nothing that’s really freaked me out or made me feel too awful about it. - Jerry Garcia

all i burn is audio cds.  I know it will kick me in my ass one day, but oh well.  I write the band/date/disc# on the disc with a memorex cd-r pen.  Moke got me all freaked about sharpies awhile back.  Got the cd-r pen for like $2 at walmart and there were 4 in a pack.  I keep all my text files saved to the computer and if i wanna know anything about the show, i just check my etree list.

Has anyone heard anything about those new Epson printers that print directly onto the CD's?

When I first saw them in an ad, I thought that could be cool.

John, they were TYs. No label, silver surface. I forget where I got them b/c it was 2 years ago. Fine tip sharpie on the inner ring is the only way I'll write on a disc anymore, unless the surface is explicitly writable.

The "donut" thing seems odd to me. Wouldn't that add a further layer of protection? What caused problems?...the adhesive used to bond the lable to the disk?
