Suggestions for recording my roomates band
« on: December 04, 2003, 04:31:52 PM »
Ive been recording my roomates band at our house using an XY config. from the corner of the room(they are in the opposite corner facing me).  The instruments from left to right are Bass, Drums, Guitar.  The bass and guitar amps are a few feet in front of the drums and the bass amp is on the ground and the guitar amp is on top of another amp (about knee height).  The room im recording in in pretty small and ill measure it and post the dimesions soon.  I was just wondering what suggestions yall have on a different way of recording them.  I want to get the best possible sound because im going to make them a promotional cd to hand out around campus and to some bars and stuff.  Thanks for the help in advance ;)
preciate it

I'm assuming you want to stick with what you've got and not overcomplicate this with additional mics, mixer blah.. blah.. blah

I'd start with hypers X/Y

use your headphones and manipulate the config until you get the sound you like!
I’ve had a few weird experiences and a few close brushes with total weirdness of one sort or another, but nothing that’s really freaked me out or made me feel too awful about it. - Jerry Garcia

hmmm, first thing I would do is pull the drums out of the corner...it will tighten up the low-end on the kick and toms(the corner will just add reverb and make it sound boomier than it really is).

what mics are you using?
how far distance-wise are the mics from the band?

from what you said above, x/y sounds like the right choice

the water's clean and innocent

im using the 483's>minime>m1 and im about 5-6 feet away from the amps.  I put some spiked foam up on the walls but it doesnt insulate the sound that well (works a little bit).  As for the drums, where should I put them?
