There's a thread in the Archival Info forum about building DIY RC/SLA battery packs.  All the info you need should be there.  And yeah, that's the same RC battery a lot of people are using.

There was also a link, maybe the same as Brian's, that I used a while back.  Builing your own battery packs for the UA5.  I use the 9.6 volts for RC cars.

Cost around $70

Yup.  Thats exactly what I use.
Tickets are dead to me.  Except the ones I have, don't have, and lost.  Not to mention the ones you have, don't have, and lost.   And the ones that other dude has, doesn't have, and lost.  Let me know if you need some tickets, I'm happy to oblige.

I got all this stuff from Radio Shack:

8x AA holder (1.2vx8=9.6v)
2x 9v battery plugs
1 UA5-type plug and adapter wire

Soldered all together, I added a second 9v plug and a 6 AA holder for alkaline batteries (1.5sx6=9.0v) in case of emergency where I can't recharge...

Thanks to Dail Reed for the original stuff, I've since resoldered and replaced most of the parts...

Wow. How long does 8 AA's run your UA-5?
Governor Jim McGreevey was equally disturbed about the upcoming population increase. "New Jersey cannot support all of these wookies," he said. "For starters, we don't have nearly enough kindbud. At best, we can muster up a Q.P. of some beasties, but we've not a dime-bag more."

Yeah. The 9.6v RC packs make for a simple setup.
