5G diginoise interference in recordings?
« on: March 30, 2022, 05:42:33 PM »
hello - my recording lineup is Schoeps MK4->nbob actives->Naiant Tinybox->Sony PCM-A10.  i have just recently started hearing random diginoise in the recordings and have isolated it to interference from my 5g samsung note 20 phone.  whenever i activate airplane mode on the phone, the diginoise disappears.

i activated airplane mode on a recent recording and still picked up an occasional, less pronounced diginoise.  i am thinking it could have been caused by a nearby phone.  i just tested putting the recorder in an RFID blocking fanny pack and it does shield the tinybox and recorder from the diginoise but the mic cables are still susceptible.

any ideas on shielding the cables?  my first thought is to sew up a sheath with the RFID blocking ripstop fabric.

any other ideas?

thanks!

My Nextel used to add diginoise back when I ran a dat recorder but it had to be pretty close to the deck. I don't have any ideas about shielding the cables. Best bet is to enclose the phonew as best you can I think.

My buddy had an ATT phone (GSM transmitters) which would interfere with his car stereo RIGHT BEFORE IT RANG every time. (circa 2006)
Verizon phones are CDMA radios, not GSM, so they didn't do that.

Doesn’t help your situation, but current OEM Schoeps mikes have a RFI shield built into XLR connector.
