mbox as standalone pre? (no laptop)
« on: December 23, 2005, 06:34:14 PM »
I dunno how weird this idea is.  Tell me if i'm stupid.

I have an mbox i bought years ago, but i rarely record w/ it because my laptop is so huge.

We are messing around making a no-budget indy film and I was wondering if it would be possible to use the mbox as an ad hoc beachtek-style preamp.

I've seen various "usb batteries" to power usb devices...  anybody know if it would work to hook the mbox up to a battery then use it as a phantom preamp to feed a recorder either via the headphone or the spdif outputs?

Any obvious caveats you guys see?  (to be honest i'm not sure if the mbox does a live feed from analog in to spdif out, but i know the headphone out would work to feed a line input recorder.)

oh, and, merry christmas!

thanks,
-andrew
