Topic: cant burn cdrs only dvds is my laser screwed?

i have nero and a sony dual layer drive
i burned 30 cdrs in a row yesterday.
something has stopped working,cant burn cdrs now only dvdrs.
please help thank you

My Sony RB30 desktop has done this to THREE different DVD-R/W burners.  Two Sonys and one NEC.  If you still have a warranty on your PC USE IT!  I just went out and bought another inexpensive NEC and still have the last Sony Drive they sent as a replacement shrinkwrapped in mylar as a back...because I know that I will need it.

seriously though seems weird that you would all the sudden lose the burner usually it will start to die mid burn and finally just die
seems even more weird to me that somoen would have multi burners do it, has to be an issue with the comp as a whole

Did you do a firmware upgrade?  I had a Sony DVD burner that was only 8x and it came with a patch so that it could use 16x media, installed that and now I can't burn CD-Rs any faster than 4x.  It defaults to the slowest speed because it doesn't read the disc before it burns as it apparently is only looking for DVD media.  If I burn to a CD-R with a minimum speed of 8x, it crashes and won't burn to it.  Maybe that's the problem.....unfortunately I don't know any fixes

put in a new drive, the old drive is also in there.
i can burn cdrs on the new drive and dvds on the old one,
still wont recognize a cdr in the dvdr drive though.
im giving up.
anyone care to comment on this problem now?
