Title: reducing drums in post?
Post by: jerryfreak on February 24, 2019, 11:05:03 PM
was too close to the stage for this one, drums are too loud particularly the snare. anyway to improve it? i tried notch filtering with EQ but it didnt really do much

Altering actual balance between instruments on a two channel recording is pretty tough. You can always try to pull down the fundamental, but for an instrument like snare, you're gonna have a very hard time getting it down far enough without effecting pretty much every other instrument on stage. If it's center stage you can try pulling down the center using a plugin like Waves Center.

Sounds good to me but i'm a drummer and like my drums way up front like that always.

Multiband compressor applied to the snare drum, de-esser to the cymbals?

Sounds pretty good to me. Almost sounds like you might just be able to bring up the vocals.

As someone else said. RX7. Use the Music Rebalance portion.

RX7 Music Rebalance is spooky how well it works.

I'd use a compressor plugin, if you get the threshhold, attack and release right, you can bring down the level of those drum hits without affecting the rest of the sound.

Yeah...  but only RX7 advanced has that tool. But with it and $1200 it will fix a lot of stuff.   ;)
They'll have a sale in a few months and you can get it for half.

I bought RX 7 Standard when it was on sale and Music Rebalance is included.

Agreed, I'd use a compressor myself. If something is poking out like that I'll usually try to use the compressor in parallel so I'm bringing up the quieter stuff rather than squashing the peaks, but sometimes it works better to do it the other way.

I haven't tried Rx for this but you can get free compressors.

wow izotope you crazy

that was ridiculously easy. just dropping percussion by 4 db and raising vox by 2db in music rebalance

Yeah.  With the right source material, I've been able to make the band not have a bass player at all, without it influencing the kick drum.  Make the vocals twice as loud.  Etc.

Only advice you already thought of...try to pull down the highs/mids with the Equalizer...should at least downcrease the snaredrume a bit...listening to the sample the snaredrums sounds quite "bassy and full-on"...Also in "Cool Edit Pro (Audobe) there was a function called "equalize more music"...which downcreases the drums a bit (It does a calculated equalizer)...yet I´m sure you will get the same results if you do the equalizing manually too.

If I get some more ideas I´ll bring them on.

Good luck!

lacking Music Rebalance:

Mult a second copy of the source in parallel.
Listening only to the copy, gate it so it sounds like drum hits only.
Reverse it's polarity.
Mix it with the original at whatever level reduces drums appropriately.   Tweak gate settings to see if any slight variation improves results.

If you ever need more drums, don't reverse polarity.

^That's a cool trick.

Lacking that or Music Rebalance (looking forward to trying that out sometime!), if going the compressor route, try a plugin which is specifically targets transient shaping which should better target the drums.

That is a very cool feature.
Does anyone know if there is anything similar in Adobe Audition?
