Vista 64 Taper Progs?
« on: November 18, 2008, 10:16:42 PM »
Looks like it's time to switch out the DAW.
I'm going to try Vista based on MS's end of life for XP of 4/2009  (security patches until 4/2014)

Any suggestions?
Let's start with CD Burning...
Someone on CDFreaks suggests SwiftDisc, which I have never heard of

Do we have a Vista + Recording related software thread going somewhere? I couldn't find one, but thought that there was one

I'm wondering if anyone is running Vista 64 bit

CD Wave
MKW Act
FLAC Frontend
Audacity
Adobe Audition (1.5?)
Voxengo M-S plugin
mkwcon
ShnAmp
shorten
md5sum.exe
EAC
shntool
Peter King's SHN 2k Batch Files
Trader's Little Helper

Any "tuning Vista for a DAW"  tips?

Running 64bit Vista Business with the following working fine:
Nero8 or 9
CDWav 1.9.7
FlacFrontEnd 1.7.1
MKW
SoundForge 9.0e (running as administrator and with the swap on the C drive remapped to the root)
TLH (current release and everyone prior)

Thanks!

The cost for the upgrade from Nero 6.6 is more than I ever found it worth

Is anyone using SwiftDisc to burn CDs?

Does it do DAO?   Tickless/gapless?
TAO?
Cuesheet burning?

Hell, at $20 it's worth a try...

I assume you mean Nero, and it does burn audio cds with no pauses between tracks (as long as you click the option)

my laptop has vista home premium (not by conscious choice but whatever)

you can run programs "as xp/200/nt" etc.  I have not had any trouble with cool edit 2.1 or burnatonce.  I HAVE had trouble creating fingerprints for FLAC using flac frontend, however.  it creates a nothing file everytime so i have to xfer the files to my desktop and create fingerprints on it . . .

No, I meant SwiftDisc, it's priced from the manufacturer at $20 until year's end.  I guess I'll have to test it.

I'm using an older version of Nero now, and it's fine on XP, but I know that I would have a $60 upgrade for Vista.
I get most of Nero's features from other programs with burn capability, like EAC.
I'd rather put that money toward Samplitude or something, if Audition 1.5 won't play on the Vista 64 box.
Maybe compatibility mode will be my saving grace...

Some of those Win16 programs just plain did not install on Win32/2000/XP platform
So I'm crossing my fingers.
It's gonna be a "fun" weekend     ::)

BTW, are you highlighting the files before selecting fingerprint?
I had a version of XP that needed that to work right.

Thanks everyone for the information so far!

OK, here's some stuff for Vista-based DAWs that I've found:

http://www.audioforums.com/windows-vista-optimization.php

http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/04/06/optimize-vista-by-disabling-unused-unneeded-or-unnecessary-windows-services/

http://www.tweakhound.com/vista/tweakguide/page_7.htm

I'm still interested in anything else that you've found that works or does not in Vista.

Great thread!  I just purchased a 64bit Vista machine, and have installed cdwav editor, Nero 7, Sony Soundforge 9, and iTunes with no problems...so far!  The machine seems to handle these programs much faster w/ other programs running also... ;D

Keep this thread going by adding what you have installed, and leting us know issues as they come up...

How about DAT2WAV?  Anybody try this yet?

Thinking about upgrading my video card and RAM in the next few weeks so I can run Vista 64bit and wondered if I would loose this capabilty,

Being how old that is, I would assume no dice... and also because the drivers probably wont work in a 64 bit environemnt

Again, I am assuming

Samplitude SE is super cheap, under $100 (Euros 49).  That's a lot of software for that money.  The SE will not burn CD's for you, but can do lots of channels (48 tracks) and is applicable against an upgrade purchase.  You can burn from another app.  Yes, I use SAM.    8)

I use Mediacoder for converting wav files.

It is a 64 bit program, that's why I use it.

There is also a multritrack program called DarkWave Studio , but I have not used that.

I am not able to get EAC to work on my 64bit Vista
