it's around here somewhere. Search for DVD A Wavelab and you should find it.

Should have posted here....

Pardon my ignorance, but can you play DVD-A discs on a standard DVD player?

It takes a DVD player that specifically plays DVD-A's.

Don't most these days?

I'm trying to figure out how these are different than using a DVD application that just puts up a black screen and plays the 24/96 bit audio...

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't DVD-audio discs encoded in Dolby or DTS. ie there are six separate channels of audio coming out. As opposed to the 24/96 which is just really high-quality/resolution stereo sound.

Yes and no. There are PCM 2 channel discs out there as well. I'm trying to figure what people are making. Are they really encoding discs, or simply putting out PCM two channel discs? (that's what I've started to do...).

Me too. People talk about making their DVD-audio discs but to be a true DVD audio discs, wouldn't you need the six channels? People are only recoring (most often) with a pair of mics so how can they extract six channels.  I'm guessing they (with Wavelab) are just splitting the two channels which your stereo system would do anyways. Or they have multiple sources (from a spread of locations in the  venue).
So I guess yeah, if you only have a stereo recording,  you will achieve the same results with 24/96.
But if you are fortunate enough to have say, two aud sources and a sbd., (that would be killer!) then you could get the full experience of DVD-audio but keeping the six channels separate.

Sad part is, I have 4 channels of seperate data now, and because I can only lay these tracks down as two channel PCM DVD discs (because there ain't no Mac OS X DVD-A application that I know of...), I have to mix these down to two channels. However, the bright side is, I would have to do this anyhow and I don't have the time to be screwing with this stuff for weeks on end.

DVD-V audio discs will play in a standard DVD player, DVD-A discs will only play on a player specificaly capable of DVD-A.  And no, they don't not HAVE to be multi-channel, can be regular old two-track.

while the DVD-audio specification allows for multi-channel audio, it is not limited to that.  You can have a "true" DVD-audio disc with 2 channel Linear PCM data.  I use discwelder, and all the DVD-Audio discs that I have made have been stereo, uncompressed PCM data, whether at 24/96, or 16/44.1.  (yup, that's right, I've made DVD-Audio discs with 16/44.1 data meant for CD's, but with DVD-Audio, I can get 2 or 3 whole shows onto one disc).  DVD-audio also allows you to put more than one format onto the same disc.  so the first track could be stereo 24/96 PCM data, the next could be DTS 5.1, and the third could be 16/48, or anything else, you get the idea...

So, how many people actually have DVD-A players? I've been creating DVD-video discs with 24-bit audio on them. I figured this is what most people would have equipment for...

true, video-DVD discs are more compatiple right now.  as time goes on, more and more DVD players support DVD-Audio, so this issue will diminish.  Regardless, whenever a give a show to a friend, they invariably want CD's anyway, so these DVD-Audio discs that I'm burning only need to work in one DVD player - mine :)

which one? I belive i have the 841. It is amazing. if your tv supports DVI deffinatly hook it up that way. I have noticed that the samsung has a bit of memory in it. when you shut it off it remembers where you were last.

The HD841. I bought it more for the audio than the video. I have a nice Sony DVD Player that is only a few years old (4), but doesn't support any high def audio stuff.

I can't hook up DVI since my TV was made before that (it's 7 years old now). In fact, I may not hook it up to a TV at all. Can I do that? Do I need to look at some screen to play Audio DVDs and CDs?

No, you don't need the TV at all (unless you have a DVD-V ewith menus).  I originally bought my Pioneer DV-525 b/c it had a coaxial out and ran that digi-audio into a HHb CDR850 to clone CD's.  Worked fine as it was for years before I thought about renting a DVD one night.

Does Nero Burning Rom make 24/96 disc playable in any DVD player? I know of a program, Audio DVD Creator that does, but it costs $45  :( Is there a cheap or free way to make a 24/96 disc that plays in any old DVD player?

Are the discs made with WaveLab playable in any DVD player or just DVD-A compatable players?

My experience has been that most DVD players do not support DVD-A right now.
Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.

Nero will burn DVD-V discs, but the files (Video-TS folder) have to be generated by another prog.  I believe 24/96 files can be put on DVD-V discs (i've done 16/48 & 24/48 on DVD-V).  Wavelab will only generate DVD-A discs which of course require a DVD-A capable player.  I have used Sony DVD Architect to make DVD-V discs, not free, but you might find a demo somewhere.  I think the Adobe DVD progs (cant' remember the name right now) can do this as well, again, not free, but maybe a demo out there somewhere.

If you had a Mac, then the answer would be yes since they come with iMovie and iDVD. That's how I've been doing it recently.
