jb3 question
« on: December 25, 2003, 12:47:02 AM »
merry christmas all.

i just got a jb3 from santa.  i plan on using it for drum lessons, rehearsals, workshops, various field recordings etc...

i'm using an AT822 for line in recording.  is there a way to change the recording levels on the jb3??  nothing i've seen on the CD or on the unit itself makes me believe so.

thanks in advance...

g

I also received mine from santa! Is 1.20.06 still the firmware that people use? Or can you go with the latest?

Y'all should check out the yahoo group njb3tapers.

As far as changing recording levels....yes, it has level controls.  The chip used in the JB3 does have an analog gain stage.  I believe it is commonly accepted that if you use the "line-in" option with gain up to 12dB, it's analog. Anything above that(only possible with "mic-in") is just digital gain.  Personally, I don't use any gain, as I have still seen nothing to lead me to believe that the JB3 definitely uses that analog gain stage.

Creative just came out with new firmware a few days ago.  I've heard of one person having troubles so far.

Merry Christmas, and congrats to all of you on getting a Jukebox 3!  To get the visual recording level meters and other features, yes, you must upgrade it's firmware.  I'd recommend starting at Version 1.32.02.  Another firmware update came out a few days ago;  I'm waiting a bit to see how it pans out, i.e. to see whether there are any bugs in it.  It's probably okay, but I'm the conservative type so I'm gonna wait.

I've been using v1.32.02 for months now and love it.  Go here to get this version, or the latest firmware v1.40.06 if you are so inclined:

http://www.nomadness.net/modules.php?op=modload&name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=13

Good luck.  Take care of and baby your JB3 and it will give you many years of taping satisfaction.  :)

peace,
Keith

David - I know I've looked at that page before..I must've been stupid when I did.  Your tests (thanks for doing them) do seem to indicate that there is true analog gain being applied.  My apologies for ignoring your work :)

I just got mine too. Do you guys have any mistakes I could learn from? So far it seems sweet, but it definitely needs to be handled with care. Now, i just have to get a glass cable.

Yup, that's right, Bean.  I have two - one that came with the JB3, and another I got off EBay for ~$30 or so.  I also have plans to run this sucker off 9.6v RC batteries knocked down to 5v - the internal batts just won't cut it during festival time, and no way am I leaving my JB3 out at a vendor's AC plug-in overnight.

well, i was thinking i was gonna get my d-8 repaired, just for transfers and the occassional festie, and pretty much use the jb3 locally 8)save a lot on media and i can always run both at big shows 8)

so that would be just perfect!!!

I use the 1.32 firmie no problems.  I think there is a 1.36 version our now that is a French version, all the same features as 1.32, but apparently the headphone volume is decreased...  And its probably in French...

Now the new firmie is 1.40.  Supposed to let you FF to the next track w/o gaps during recording, though I haven't seen it work...  Though I imagine, you could give it a buffer and blahblahblah and it would work just fine...

It has some other stuff too, but one problem that has been found is playback now has gaps at tracks whereas the 1.32 don't do that apparently (I don't know, don't use mine for playback).

I'm waiting a while to see how the tests come out, but I may update to that version to add the gapless recording feature...  Now if only they'd add a setting to automatically FF and create a new track at 3 hours!

Good luck with your Nomad, there are lots of posts about them here, search around...

okay here goes,I got one of those referbed units from ebay and I think I'm ready to start trying it out.

I currently run v3>dap1 and want to run the jb3 as a back up for the time being.so what do I need to get signal to the jb3 from the v3 and where is the best place you guys have delt with to get this stuff.

also, what would I need to transfer to the harddrive besides the disc and cables that came in the box w/the unit.

thanks in advance for your replies to my stupid questions.

Try an Advanced Search for the phrase "digital format converter" (without the quotes).  Make sure you go back farther than 60 days - you'll find one lengthy post about my bit-accuracy tests with the ODL-312, and another with a whole list of digital format converters I found online.

also, what would I need to transfer to the harddrive besides the disc and cables that came in the box w/the unit.

I think that's it.  If your PC doesn't currently do firewire, well worth spending a few bucks to pick up a firewire card.  Blazing fast transfers relative to USB.  FWIW, I sprung the $20 to buy Notmad Explorer (see Nomadness) as I like the interface better than the dufus Media Center or whatever it is that comes from Nomad.

thank you for that tidbit.  i haven't hooked my jb3 to any computer yet as my lappy is maxed waiting for an outboard drive, and waiting on delivery of new tower.  so, i'll head over to nomadness.
