Topic: DAP1 tips and instructions

Got a used DAP1 and downloaded the manual. Geez. It's in English, I guess, but it doesn't leave me knowing when/why to use the various features.

Surely there's gotta be a better set of instructions somewhere, or at least some tips on best practices for live taping. I tried the archives, but I couldn't come up with anything.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Running a digimod Edirol UA-5 into it. Mics are Oktava MK 012s.

look up "formatting your tape". you'll need to format your tape to record absolute time.

when it's time to record make sure the input is set to "Digital"

Well, I'm wondering about all these features for marking the starts and stops of tracks. Most tapers I know don't stop their decks very often during concerts, but should I be thinking about using these track-marking features at all?

I've never marked a track id while taping. Occassionaly I will put a 2 set show onto a 90m tape and make a track id at the start of set II but this is at home on my home decks.

I frequently write IDs to tape while at the show. Just make shure the deck is in write ID mode and then you press the record button to mark the track. This way the show is all tracked out when you transfer it.

Also, If you use a 90 for a two set show and want to listen to a segment of the first set during setbreak, write an ID at the end of the set, rewind to wherever, and when you are done, hit +1 and you are ready for the next set.

I think the P1 is a great deck.

So, Noah, check me to see if I've got this right.

During the set, you just punch the record button between songs. Then, when you dub from the tape to CD later on, those breaks transfer to CD as numbered tracks -- right?

And, if I understood the DAP1 manual, even if you miss a track break at the show -- or mark it in a slightly wrong place -- you can remove it later and put a new one exactly where you want it. Also right?

If so, that's excellent. I was hoping there was a way to use those track-marking abilities to save work later, and this would be exactly what I was hoping for. Seems like such a pain to have to sit there while dubbing to CD, punching each track number in manually during the dub.

That's right. Remember, everything is much easier on the computer. But if you want your show tracked when you leave the venue, or if you are using a stand alone cd burner, tracking at the show is smart.

but not accurate!!!

also, if you write a track id at the show, youll then transfer it, the id will be on your comp tracked as you did it at the show, well, if you didnt track something right, which will happen a BUNCH, youll have to use wavglue or something to put the music back together seamlessly, then track again, so i wouldne even bother honestly.....only need to do it is at the beginning and end of sets!!!

Noah -- I finally got around to trying what you suggest above, and I'm stumped.

"Write ID" is not one of the modes on my machine, or at least I can't find it. When it's in record/pause mode, the choices available by punching "ID select" are Write Start, Write End, and Write Skip. I have tried Write Start and Write End, and neither seems to do what you said.

Once more ... the idea is that the tape is rolling in record, and you punch Write Start?? And that's supposed to mark the end of the current track and the start of the new one, without stopping the tape?

It doesn't seem to do that. Also, the track number doesn't increment, and the absolute track length gets lost.

What am I doing wrong?
