Sony's being Discontinued
« on: March 06, 2004, 11:47:12 AM »
This came to Sonicsense from our distributor:

To All-

Please be aware that one of the Sony factories in Japan, after taking a look at worldwide demand, has shutdown without advanced notice to Sony US, production of the CDRW33, CDRW66, PCMR300 and PCMR700. The PCM R500 will stay in the line until further notice and sales for this piece have been brisk. Sorry to be the bearer of this discontinuation news. FCM is researching Sony's selection of Consumer crossover units to see if we can find any units that meet the specifications of the discontinued W33 and R300. Will keep you abreast if we find any.

get 'em now, before they're gone.

im sure there sitting there over in japan thinking about what new format to bring out that will be as useless as the one they came out with before, history repeating itself, always works out.  i hope sony can get something that is actually gonna live through the format wars

Sony is pretty good at doing that!!   I would think that the market that was there for DAT is also there for a nice professional HD unit.   Seems like most people are going two routes latly:  jb3 or lappy.   Laptops, to me, are too big and too fragile for live taping.  Not sure about the jb3 yet.

More than likely is Sony comes out with a new recorder it will require a special cable or some other pain in the ass. :P

wasnt DCC a Phillips format?
Marantz never made a DCC unit(that I know of)...seemed like you could only find Phillips DCC decks.

a buddy of mine here in Richmond still has 1 of those decks...works pretty nice. it plays standard casettes as well

Solid State recording is going to be it. The marantz looks cool:

http://www.american-digital.com/prodsite/product.asp?p=1099&c=192&name=MarantzPMD670

but note where it says "when media becomes available" for duration of recordings. 64 Mb isnt enough for the tuning up!

No moving parts. Memory sticks...like StarTrek. And sony is the king of memory sticks.

Then again, Sony was going to discontinue the venerable old D-5 back in the early 80's, and the tapers made such a big run on them, they kept them in the line for another 5 years.

If Creative would add line/optical recording capabilities to the JB3 Zen, I'd be 2 or 3 of them.  THAT'S a stealth unit.
