has anyone tried ca-11/14 to sony pcm d100?
« on: October 27, 2016, 04:01:09 PM »
hello ts

I am looking for a decent external mic that fits on both
my pcm d100and my purpose.
I am a concert goer and i can't afford to have too visible nor
large microphones.

The internal mic of d100 is great only
when there is no drum sound.

At first I tried to change my recorder
to tascam dr100mkiii, which has dual recording ability
however, according to the Germans music forum site
the mic of dr100mkiii is too sensitive to accept
such noise.

Therefore I have decided to find less visible
affordable and obviously can handle loud
concert noise.

I have been search for the reviews in here ,but
I wasn't able to find one. has anyone tried
church audio ca-11/14 to sony pcm d100?

I would like to know if it sounds better without clipping
and do I need any extra gears such as battery box
and dual preamps. Thanx

Chris Church will always recommend using a battery box or pre-amp with his mics, but I have used his CAFS, CA11 and CA14 mics directly into the mic input on my D100 with plug in power numerous times, and at some load shows, and been very happy with the results.

Definitely use a battery box with the Sony PCM-M10 which provides 3V PIP, but the D100 provides 5V PIP.

I have also successfully used AT853's(4.7k Mod) directly into the mic of the D100 at loud shows, and some mics built using Primo EM172 capsules for quiet ambiences.
Mics: Sennheiser MKH 8040, Sennheiser MKH 8020, AT BP4025, AT 853 cards, CA CAFS, CA 14 Omnis, CA 11 (Cards + Omnis), Soundman OKM II Classic
Battery Boxes: Sony XLR-1, CA 9200 Preamp, CA Ugly 2 Preamp, CA Ugly BB, Shure FP24
Recorders: Sound Devices MP3, Sony PCM-D100, Sony PCM-D50, Sony PCM-M10, Sony PCM-D10, Roland R-07, Tascam iXJ2

adrianb!!!
Surprised and happy to see your reply
I was just reading all your posts cuz i found out
that you have been using the similar combination
as i was about to do.

Most of your comments and posts were very helpful
but if i may, can i ask you about noise floor?
I mean internal mic of d100 is really clean
and iam afraid if using ext mic will affect it

my second question is if i put amp and batt with it
would it enable me to record at largr inputs?
I often record musicals and plays (student act so its allowed) but I have to set my dials to 2.5to avoid any kind of clipping and even though d100has very low noise floor it has
its whitenoise when i amplify the sound.

so i was wondering if using ext amp and batt would enable me to get sound with higher gain

again thanx!!!

My experience with the internal mics on the D100 is that they are very good at capturing ambiences, nature and low volume music, but useless for loud noises. I think I've read people expressing a similar experience here.

It seems like the shows you are trying to record have a wide range of volumes, from quiet to pretty loud. I think some external mics, such as those often used by people here, might be worth trying. Good luck.
Mics: Sennheiser MKH 8040, Sennheiser MKH 8020, AT BP4025, AT 853 cards, CA CAFS, CA 14 Omnis, CA 11 (Cards + Omnis), Soundman OKM II Classic

hmmmm, shouldn't be hiss if you are 24 bit and getting reasonable levels. I am also surprised that the d100 internal mics can't handle drums. My d50's will, and I speculate that the d100's are better.  Are you using the mic attenuation? The d50 has a -20 setting I use all the time. Check your owners manual....I would try various settings on the recorder as stand alone before going with external mics. If your settings are incorrect, they will probably be incorrect using external mics as well....

thanx for the comment

yes i have tried att 20
what i get from is too small sound input 'with'
clipping.
and yes i have set to 24 and also went to sony a/s
center only to hear that the d100 have very sensitive
mic and its normal for it to happen.

But this only happens when i go to rock concert or festivals
other than that d100 works great on indoor-not rock related shows. especially on plays :)
I am very satisfied with its quiet sound base

I just wanted it to be better.
Thats all :)
I guess i am ready to order the preamp and ext mic
I also own tascam dr2d and m10 so even if it doesn't
go well with d100 it will be a fun experience with my
other gadgets
