Title: Battery Set up for R4 questions
Post by: ccage on November 25, 2008, 11:06:22 PM
My buddy bought Phanophish's R4 and Im trying to get him correct parts for battery system
PhanoPhish copied some links for me so thanks to him.
Was wondering if folks out there could verify and/or correct my thinking on this.

As far as battery cable goes I assume i use:
Adaptaplug F to F cable
B Tip for Battery End  positive symbol on tip alligned w/ blank side of cable end
M tip for R4 End   negative symbol on tip aligned with "tip" logo on cable end.

Does Batteries Plus or anyone besides WalMart sell compatible Lion DVD batteries?
I hate to spend money at WalMart for personal reasons but will do so if needed.

Thanks in Advance

While connecting an external battery to the R4's power plug is most convenient, there is a liability if connection is momentarily lost when recording (maybe also when playing back) that your data, and sometimes also HD/flash memory storage, will be corrupted to not be usable, and this even if having working batteries inside the deck.

While this is not a concern or liability with some other decks, the R4 does not gracefully handle power source switching.

So suggest being most careful any external power connection. Take care your connections will not (even for a fraction of a second) drop out.  Like with power plug rotation, a tug on the power cord, or any other circumstance causing external power disruption while the deck is running.

For this reason I only offer external R4 powering solutions using internal dummy battery connection that's not as convenient to use, but most reliable to never cause disconnect tragedy.

Thanks RowJimmy!!
Will get on this asap.

Then tape the cable in place on the R4 end with gaffer's tape to make sure it doesn't come unplugged when you least expect it.

Damn after posting above the curse hit me and last night for the first time I went to switch the lock on and the plug came out. Missed about a 1-1/2-2-1/2 minutes but the band was stoked because they felt they bombed the song ::)

FYI for the same cost as the ratshack cable and tips you can get a nice one custom made from Ed at KindKables.  Just sayin.

Adaptaplug F to F cable
B Tip for Battery End  positive symbol on tip alligned w/ blank side of cable end
M tip for R4 End   negative symbol on tip aligned with "tip" logo on cable end.

I've been having trouble with my battery cable so I hit ratshack today and picked up the above supplies. However, when I align the tips as described above (- mark on both plugs is aligned with "tip" logo on both sides of the cable) I don't get any power to the deck. Any ideas?

Reverse the polarity on one of the plug ends.

That did it. So really 1 tip should be aligned with - and the other with +

+Thanks
