722 Batteries
« on: August 15, 2007, 04:24:00 AM »
Just received my 722 today, when I bought it from Trew Audio I also ordered an extra battery. The battery that came with the unit is a Sony NP-F770 this battery is rated @  7.2v , 31.7 Wh . Is this the same size battery that is sent with all 722's from Sound Devices ?  The extra battery Trew sent me is quite a bit smaller in size and is rated as 7.2v , 1885 mAh . By my calculations the battery sent by Trew with the 722 has roughly 2.8 times  the capacity of the extra. My question is this what size batteries is everyone else using ? And recording at 24/48  what are some of the run times you guys are getting ? Using no pre and using say a V3 on the front end?
Please list your battery size with your run times and if a pre is used. I understand that using analog active inputs increases power consumption and of course using phantom power also increases power consumption.
I'm going to record Bloodkin in Jackson and in Oxford, MS. next week end and just wanted a little information. I'm working ridiculous hours and will not have much of chance to do any testing besides some base line information from other 722 users in regard to power consumption would be most helpful . Thanks,
I also just read in the "Included Accessories" section a 1500 mAh battery is supposed to be included so a 1850 mAh sized battery may be ok?

      Best regards Phillip

FWIW - I was able to record 3 hours on my SD 702 at 24/96 using the included 1500mA battery.

Not an apples to apples comparison as the 702 doesn't use a HDD.

Rule of thumb for the 722 is 1 amp an hour, w/o phantom you may get slightly more

You want to pickup a few 6000mah or bigger battery packs.  NP-F970 is what they are marketed as.  Some folks have had some success from 1800emart.com, bad cells have been replaced

http://store.1800emart.com/np-f970.html

Otherwise go to B&H or another reputable seller for real Sony cells, stay away from ebay.

Frank at Cascade bumped me up to a 4600maH battery when I got my 722.  Thanks, Frank! I bought two more 4600aH Impacts from B&H when the 1800emart 7600maH battery broke.  The 1800emart came through with a replacement just as quick as anything.  Now I can tape 18 hours worth on batteries, should the need arise!  And be recharging the flat one with the charger 1800emart sent me as it runs of my cigarette lighter, too.  LOL

Also, SD says about one amp per hour running phantom at 24/48 and this is the consensus among the users on this board, too.

Wrong forum but here goes anyways...

My 722 came with a 4600mah battery from the factory. That was in Dec. 05. I also have a genuine Sony NP-F970 (6600mah) that I bought from battery bank and an Impact 7600mah I got from B & H. The Impact battery is significantly better (and cheaper!) than the Sony's so far in my testing.

running line-in on the 722 witha  pre in front, I was getting around 9-10 hrs MAX out of a 6000mah battery. running mic-in/phantrom ON/LEDS ON/backlight OFF/writing to the INHDD, I get about 1 amp/hr, which gets me safely about 5 hrs or so with a 6000mah battery. when writing to JUST the cf card on my 722 and the INHDD OFF, I get about 3 extra hrs running Phantom ON/LEDS ON/backlight OFF/wrioting to JUST the caf card. I would say I can easily get about 7.5 hrs to the cf card. when writing to JUST the INHDD or BOTH the cf card/INHDD, I can get about 6 hrs or so

so SAFELY I would say:

7 hrs Phantom ON/Backlight OFF/headphones CRANKED/CF CARD ONLY

5 hrs Phantom ON/Backlight OFF/headphones CRANKED/INHDD ONLY

Maybe I am not quite as bright as the average bear, but is it really necessary to have the LED's and the backlight on at all??  I run it in "stealth mode" with the lights off most of the time.  After I get my levels set I really do not have to watch the lights anymore.  I check once it a while, but 90 - 95% of the time those power-suckers are off.  YMMV

I NEVER have the backlight on because i ALWAYS have a flashlight and it DRAINS the battery. but LED's are a NECESSITY for me anyways. you NEVER know when that one cymbal crash or loud bass bomb will peak your levels ;)

I got lucky here at work we had a problem and had to shut down the turbines ,(closed cooling water pump trip) so I got a chance to run a test with the 1850mAh Nuon battery. Running a pair of JW mod 461's with the gain cranked to 50, using the low gain setting I wrote to the H/D for over three hours with back light on and head phones cranked. I wanted to do a worst case test with the small battery. Right now I'm recharging the tested battery and will probably call it good enough for now, as I'm sure of getting at least a fairly long second set using the afore mentioned battery.

I know its not hard to do at all, but changing batts inbetween sets kind of sucks. you have to turn the 722 upside down(which is kind of difficult in the AR-7 PB bag(if you dont hvae it in a PB bag its not a huge deal) but then you are messing with things and anything can happen. you can knock loose a cable or something to that effect and not know it until its too late. Once setup, I like elaving EVERYTHING as is, but thats just me

and thats a pretty darn good runtime with an 1850mah battery and the backlight ON. I bet if you turned the backlight OFF, you might be able to get a whole show with that one battery. I never ahd that good of a runtime with the backlight ON. I should write an email to SD and see what the current draw is with the backlight ON compared to with the backlight ON. i know they say 1amp/hr, but I wonder if that is with the backlight ON ??? I would think thats with it OFF. I know they claim 1amp/hr with PHANTOM ON, but would like to know what they have to say with the BL ON :)

the 7xx units KICK-ASS dont they? I LOVE mine and would like to get buried with it if it ever came to fruition ;D actually, no, id be a good taper and give it to a taper friend that i KNOW would get some use out of it when I was LONG GONE :)

and DAYUM Philip, thats quite a nice mic locker you have going on

i have a question for you thats off this topic's thread, but why do you have all those 4xx bodies ??? you need another all-in-one recorder like me ;D

Yes I have 2 JW mod 460's, 2 unmodded 460's, and 2  480's a pair of 184's and I just bought a pair of 414's.The reason I have so many mics is I also have a 002 rack that I can run 18 channels and my dream is to have all channels using good quality S/D or L/D mics with vocal feeds from the house. I'm probably in the near future going to dump the Presonus Digimax LT (8 channel pre/adat) for something of better sonic quality . It would be way cool to have Doug Oade build me a 8 channel 248 as I like almost all of the recording I've ever heard using that pre.

+T. I am SOOO Jealous of that mic locker ;D 8)

my goal is to have a pair of 414's in the next year or so as well so I have a pair of full-bodied mics(483's), a pair of HQ actives(mbho cards/hypers/soon to be wide cards and a fig-8 too) and eventually a pair of 414 ULS's probably. I would like the subcard option on the XLS's, but I have ehard from a few well respected tapers that the ULS sound better than the XLS's. can you comment on that fact? did you get XLS's or ULS's ???

anyways, nice setup my man. and I love how you call the 722 a bit-bucket ;D its quite an expensive bit-bucket ehh? 8) you shoudl try the rpeamps on that thing if you already havent. I ran 481/3>Sonosax SX-M2/V2/V3>722 and I MUCH prefer the 722's pre's for the 48x. Ive only run the mbho's thru the 722 straight, but it sounds SOOO damn good and clean and warm that I will never have a reason to try a preamp in front of the 722 for them. I bet 414>722 would sound great too ;D buts eeing as how the 414's have a bigger lowend, that could also be a boomy/muddy combo at times.....

I favor the sound of the ULS.  On a side note as to the abuse they can take my trusty old set has been on permanent moe. tour for the past 11 years or so.  They are the mics they use for the soundboard/aud mix that Brendan started and Steve continues so well.   I do miss those mics and wish  I had them to try into the 722.  None the less, those old 414s served me well for a few years and since have been up front on stage- indoors and out - smoke, rain and rough handling, and haven't missed a beat.
