cdwav output as flac?
« on: March 16, 2005, 12:25:28 AM »
Never saw this option before (just reinstalled cdwav today)  When you click save as, there is an "Output Mode" pull down and flac is an option...is this option reliable?  what level flac does it output to?  anyone use it?

i use it everytime i track out a show, at least the version i have, which i think is one of the most
current versions, has the same options as frontend, letting you pick the level of compression.  i have
yet to have a problem with it and it seems that it does the encoding faster then when i just put the
wavs in frontend, no worries on using cdwave to cut and encode

fwiw, alot of us have had this discussion before, and we have concluded it doesnt compress nearly as well as flac frontend, andi havent used it in a year or so because of that

ymmv tho, ipersonally trust frontend MUCH more

not true with 16/44.  appears to not do it as good with 24/96 etc.  I did a test with the same files 16/44 using frontend and cd wave and they were the exact same.  I'll dig up the thread.

thanks for the thread, i actually searched and missed it...good thing it was in taper chat.  :P

I already outputted this show as wav's so i'll use frontend on it for this one, but i'll give it a try next time.  pretty cool feature.

I was bored that night and had just tracked out my YMSB when I saw the thread.  so yea with 16/44 there is no reason not to use cd wave to flac.   only problem I see is if there is a transfer poblem on one track that you didn't catch.

well, do the extensive tests weve done one nite and see for yourself

i KNOW older versions of cdwave were REAL screwy and didnt compress NEARLY as goiod as frontend, its called a 'bug'

i wouldnt post something like that unless ive done it for myself and saw it firsthand

well, about a year ago AS I STATED, i had MUCHO problems w/ flac'ing in cdwave, andthe files were WAY bigger, lookslike they FIXED thebug, geesh man, whythe fuck would ilie about something so dumb ???

in the last test, i simply found out that its a waste of time to encode in level 8, it saves 1-2MB per just about every 1GB of music :)

what are you trying to prove here man ???

No one said you were lying - you just wern't making sense...

Your first reply claimed -  "doesnt compress nearly as well as flac frontend"  (which makes no sense to me...)

But later that really turns out to be

"an older version has a bug" (which I've heard about)

Your first reply seems to disuade the poster from doing the very thing he should be doing...(and asked about)

Help the guy out...!
