Title: Instrument cables...
Post by: Nick's Picks on March 15, 2008, 09:57:30 AM
Is there anything specific about them vs. any other musical cable ?
they are not balanced, usually ..., correct ?

my point...
I made myself a HYDRA cable for my bass.  it sounds totally different than the run of the mill hosa cable I have.
interesting.  dont know if its the silver or the impedance difference (if any).
but, I like it !

Instrument cables are generally unbalanced.

I have to admit that I don't think I've heard a silver mil-spec instrument cable before, at least to my knowledge.  How does it sound?  I've made all of my cables for my bass rig and they have proven to be pretty reliable over the past few years, but an upgrade might be in store if the silver sounds that much better.

I rewired my old lap steel with a length of mil spec silverclad and while the difference is noticeable and an improvement.....it is not huge. May be different for a modern electric bass as opposed to a 50s single coil.

just sounds cleaner, more detailed maybe.  brighter ?
one mans bright is another mans "detailed and transparent".  Can't really say for sure, but the cheap hosa cable sounds muddy in comparison.

but, that is sooooo subjective.  my cable.  my bass.  my ears.
your guess is as good as mine.
