Title: Home Theater Recs
Post by: Nick S. on December 16, 2003, 03:40:17 PM
Ok, so I've started the playback upgrade and just picked up some B&W 803's and a Rotel 1080 (2X 200watts) and am now looking to get a reciever that I can run for home theater and run the pre-outs to the Rotel.  I'm also going to be using my Lucid d/a for dat  and dvda/sacd listening.  I don't need anything too fancy but nevertheless I want something that I'm not going to be upgrading in a year . . .  looking to spend ~ $1000.

thanks,
Nick

Thanks,  actually that has been the only HT unit that I've seen that's looked any good in my price range.

Any other recs?

here's that denon on audiogon, NIB for $800 obo.  if the warranty is transferrable, you may get a good deal.  no idea if this is a good deal or not.

Denon warranty no good w/ online purchase. Some places offr it, but the price is what you would py at local shop.  A third rec for the 3803

scott, that's not entirely true about the denon waranty not being valid with online purchase- some places are allowed to sell online as well as in the storefront and hold the denon waranty.

Jonny,
You are correct, but in my experience the price is the same as you would get in the store.  I just don't think you will find it at the low prices with the warranty.  On a side note, this receiver is about the best you will find near $1K.

You could probably find a Rotel or Marantz receiver that would compete with the Denon in the 1k range.

I own a Marantz, but they don't have the processing options the Denon has.  It all depends on what you are looking for.  All I need right now is DD and DTS.

Check out Yamaha receivers as well, try www.audioreview.com for comments from owners of the Denon model listed above and look around for a comparable Yamaha receiver as well.

i have this thing with yamaha, for some reason the name always carries the context of "cheap" to me.  now weather that is true or not is something entirely different, its just a connotation thing for me.  overall the reviews over there are pretty good.  id be careful to buy from an authorized dealer with a good rep. just in case some of the problems that im seeing in the reviews arise

Really?  That's weird, i usually consider companies like Sony "cheap" when it comes to build quality.

sony, yamaha, klh or something like that...all "cheap" but in actuality some probably make pretty good stuff.  I agree though, sony and yamaha always come across cheap to me for some unknown reason.
