If i had some more money would probably get one to have a backup recording if the tape fills up, etc

Cheaper and better is the Sony mcr-1.You hook it to your cameras firewire and record to sd cards,you don't even need to record to tape. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=sony+hvr-mrc1&N=0&InitialSearch=yes
