what is the deal with these things? do they work like they should? anyone using one?
-
Ive used one, It seems fine to me. I still prefer the track ball though :P
-
im debating beetweena nd track ball style and a wireless optical
i havent used a track ball style for a long time, but i recall it being nice once i got used to it
il shop around tomorrow when i head to the city and buy one of them
-
trackball? you mean the little ball on the top that you move with your thumb, or do you mean a normal mouse with the trackball on the bottom. I can't see any advantages to using a trackball on the bottom when you have the option to use optical. (i personally don't like the ones on top either, but thats just me)
don't know about wireless, i'm a fan of wires, heh. but i love my optical logitech i got like 4 years ago.
-
i had an optical mouse and gave it to my mom with my old pc i gave here
so i have one with a ball on bottom, i hate it
maybe they will have someone knowledgeable in best buy tomorrow ... yeah right
-
haha.

i have an optical mouse, but not wireless....mouse balls get dirty and don't work right (get your mind out of the gutter)
i would imagine that the wireless optical work just as good as the ones with wires, but i would have to test that theory out myself....oh, and the optical does work very well, better then any other mouse system
-
i had a wireless optical, worked well- ate through batteries like a mofo (ended up doing the rechargable thing).
i prefer using a trackball though- much easier to do design work on a trackball

Yes the one with the ball on top but you have to get used to it. I have a wireless one and it works great, at least for me.

I like the Belkin mini usb wireless optical mouse. Like the others said - it loves batteries. I haven't been impressed with it for gaming tho.
-
ive been using a wireless optical mouse by microsoft for the past year and love it, ill never
go back to a corded mouse ever again.

im not much of a gamer at all!

Won't ever go back to ball-optical is precise and mine gets dropped often with no sweat. Cordless adds cost and weight, but is handy I'm sure-mine is still wire

I LOVE my MS IntelliMouse optical... I have one at home and at work. When I stared my job I demanded one. :)
I've been using them for a few YEARS (about 5 now) I never had a ball mouse last more than a year or two MAX.
My favorite feature (other than never cleaning it and smooth tracking) is the back/forward buttons on the sides of the mouse. Most new mice with back/forward buttons do them both on one side of the mouse. This one has one on each side.
amazon is still selling them
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005TQ08/002-6464659-2423250?v=glance
$23
I paid ~$50/ea for mine... and would do it again if I had to.
The reviews on amazon are pretty good. Sounds like it's even good for gaming.
The only downside to optical mice I know of is the surface. Don't even think about using one on glass. Or any reflective surface. Also if the surface isn't fairly smooth you can have problems. At work my mouse sits right on a seam of the desk which would mess up the tracking. True I could just use a mouse pad... But I just "patched" the seam with paper/tape. Works great. Although after a few years the paper/tape gets nasty. :)

a lot of gamers enjoy the mx700/mx900 from logitech
very low latency.
When you are not using it, you stick it in the cradle and it charges.
-
I use a MS wireless optical mouse with my work laptop. Had it about a year, and have only swapped batteries once. When not in use, I turn the switch on the bottom to OFF.

Logitech's Cordless Optical Trackman
the in-laws gave me one Christmas 2003. Probably best gift I got that year. I've yet to change the batteries on it... I love the fact that I can scroll up and down and move forward and backward using buttons on the mouse...
