I've got a strange problem when transferring my DATs. Here's how I do it:
D8 > sony poc da12sp > optical miniplug to toslink adapter > terratec aureon 5.1 > audacity
The transfers I'm getting are really weird. When having everything connected but the DAT's not playing I get a beeping sound in the right channel. When playing the DAT the sound gets horribly distorted on the right channel and there's nothing on the left.
Attached a screenshot of the waveform (looks really weird) and a mp3 sample of the start of the transfer.
Has anyone experienced the same or knows how to fix this?
thanks
EDIT:
I just tried transferring with my HiMD:
D8 (dat 48 kHz) > sony poc da12sp > sony mz nh600 optical in (HiMD, 44.1 kHz wav)
This worked perfectly (except for 48 kHz > 44.1 kHz). So this eliminates the cable and the digital out on the D8 as the problem. Reall happy about that, since I got them both used from this board almost 2 months ago. Also, this is my first attempt to transfer a dat tape.

play with the settings for your soundcard through your PC. this happens to me all the time w/ my Zoltrix card. tweaking the settings gets me to the right ones eventually. i.e. w/ the zoltrix my choices are "normal" or "reverse", and "spdif1" or "spdif2". i try all the combinations until i get to the one that doesnt produce the noise or the distortion. hope that works for you.

Thanks for the tip. I messed around a bit with the settings and it appeared that I had to check the "signal reverse" box. Getting great transfers now :)
