Anyone recording jazz/classical acoustic in NYC??
« on: May 20, 2009, 11:17:15 PM »
I am new to music recording (but work in the film and tv biz as a soundman..)
I live in NYC and am really keen on taping classical shows.. Anything from chamber music, string quartets as wel as jazz and ethnic instruments (or any other acoustic performances)

SO my question is, what is generally the attitude towards taping in the classical community?
And where is a good place to start looking for some acts to record?

Any guidance from classical/jazz enthusiasts would be awesome ;)

it depends - many small ensembles are quite interested in having recordings made of their performances, but funds to support it are often limited.  if you can get $150 to do a gig, youre lucky.  most chamber groups are non-profit sponsored, and struggle to cover operating costs.  in NYC, this may be different of course, but in the boonies, there are always people who will volunteer to record stuff like this for free, eliminating any opportunity for you to make any money at it.  you will need to do some direct contact with groups you might want to work with, and establish yourself so they call on you.  good luck.

Thanks, that seems like a good place to start..

I dont really want to be paid anyways until I become more confident that I can pull off high quality recordings.. just want the opportunity to learn how to do it right for now.

A good way to get your foot in the door with a small quartet AND the opportunity to learn at the same time, is offer to record their rehearsals.

That way you can play around and experiment while they are doing the same. You're not getting in the way of a performance with the public present, and there is a lot of time between playing to move the mics around to try and find they best set-up.

This is what I'm doing at the moment and it seems to work out well for both myself and the quartet. They also get a free CD of their rehearsal so they get to hear where they need to improve.

bigcity - head over to gearslutz for the "remote possibilities" forum.  most of the guys there do classical and chamber recording, lots of good info, and many helpful, knowledgable people.  there are several folks from the NYC area that might have ideas for you to break into the business there, and might be able to turn some small no-pay/low-pay gigs your way.
