Going "mobile" with littlebox
« on: March 31, 2011, 09:00:25 AM »
For various reasons I am not going to be able to set up at a show tonight and will have to wear my mics it looks like.  I would prefer to use my littlebox rather than my PS/2 so I can get some cleaner gain from the LB.  I'm sure somebody has tried this in the past.  My only concern is that the level knobs on the LB turn extremely easily, so I was thinking of just gaff taping them in what I am 90% sure is the position they will need to be in, doing so conservatively so I can add a little gain from the recorder if need be.  Has anyone tried that, or have any other tips about using this pre in that manner?  The LB would be carried in a messenger-type bag in a separate pocket, so it'd be somewhat shielded from being hit.  I thought about just carrying my lowepro bag (because this is NOT "stealth" per se) but it's a bit bulky to wear in a crowd.

Sounds like the plan I'd use. I'd tape them where you are expecting it based on past history.  Best of luck.
"This is a common practice we have on the bus; debating facts that we could easily find through printed material. It's like, how far is it today? I think it's four hours, and someone else comes in at 11 hours, and well, then we'll... just... talk about it..." - Jeb Puryear

Instead of using tape, you can also put heat shrink on the knobs.
Works great on my MP-2.

like that trick!
I've used rubber grommets ( thicker than O rings) in the past.

I have the same problem and asked Jon about it and he said one thing you can do is take off the knobs of the gain control. This leaves a straight piece of metal that is not as easy to turn. Never tried it but thought it should work..
Everyday is a gift. Enjoy each one!

Mine fits on its side in a small fanny pack (fashion statement aside).  Set levels, zip the top close and I have never had a problem with wandering gain once I learned to keep my fingers out of the bag.    ;D

Fanny packs can be a great tool for a taper. I use one, but am unable to wear the  >:D hat people here like. It's a bit too much of a fashion statement.

Not if you're a fat ass geek like me that doesn't care about what the hottie standing next to me thinks I look or smell like.  ;D

It also helps that the owner of one of the local clubs is never seen out in public without a ventair...and he's not a taper.  Lots of people know him and he has a similar body style as mine, so....fat-ass tapers unite!

Hehe, in my neck of the woods (Williamsburg, Brooklyn) you'd look more out of place wearing a fanny pack than a vent-air :)  Of course, until the hipsters discover the joy of having a convenient waist pack to carry your cigarettes and credit cards in  ;D  Come to think of it, fanny packs would be really useful for this crowd, as their jeans are far, far too tight to make the pockets usable :)

Gil's is about as optimistic as the Geico caveman, but I actually think he looks like a Leprechaun more than a caveman.

Me?  I'm auditioning for Pillsbury Do-boy.

If you wrap a thin rubber band around the knobs in question, that stiffens em up bit.  That's worked for me with other units, but I've never done it on with a LB.... so, YMMV.

Guy.  I have to agree.  Whenever I've wrapped my knob, it stiffens.

Taping and a Westfalia. That's the trick.  But considering how the world has devolved, that type of situation may be limited to the old days. Or maybe I just need to get the fuck out of PA and go northwest.
