« on: October 25, 2004, 07:03:02 PM »
Just got a new laptop and I installed win 2k pro on partition c:
then i installed xp on partition g:
Now when I boot I can only get into xp.  Win 2k is not even a choice anymore.  What can I do?

There is a boot.ini file in the root of the partition that tells win 2k/xp which OS to start. But I haven't tried a dual boot with 2k/xp myself. A more usual dual boot is mixing Win9x and win 2k or xp, but this could be that Microsoft doesn't support dual booting with 2k/xp straight out of the box and that you have to tweak that boot.ini file on your own to get both working.

I looked at the boot file.  In fact there is nothing on the boot file about 2k.  But i don't know what I need to add to it to get it to work

What do you currently have in the boot.ini file ? It's probably only 4 or 5 lines long from what you described. And it's certainly a good idea to take note of the original content before trying any change there.

It is possible to to dual boot 2k & XP.  I have 2k,XP, & linux on mine.  Did you check your bios to see if your G: drive is in the boot priority?  If not try changing your boot priority to C:, G: .

I use OXSL, it will boot up to 4 OS's.  It's a prog that runs before the OS, and lets you choose witch one to boot.  Kinda like LILO and GRUB i believe.

Most MS OS's install in such a way as to overite the bootups of prexisting OS's,A boot manager like Boot Magic can prevent that

You could try editing your boot.ini file
My dual boot reads:

[boot loader]
timeout=20
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINNT="audio" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="regular win2k" /fastdetect

seems self explanatory - timeout and default values with the OS partiition and location specified (I have one drive - partition 1 is some Dell thing, partition 2 is my c: drive with the audio build, and partition 3 is the regular OS)
