FW 410 recording problems...
« on: December 21, 2004, 07:06:29 PM »
So I just got my shiny new 410 today (Oade mod) and got it all set up. And like most new toys, it doesn't want to play nicely.
The M-Audio control panel shows that I've got a S/PDIF 44.1 sample and shows levels (I'm trying to convert a DAT) but none of the software I've tried seems to want to actually record the DAT to my hard drive.
I tried the software it comes with (Delta Live and Reason Adapted) and even Audacity. All the settings are right, my control panel is set that the 410 is the input card and the sample rates are correct for the 410 and Audacity, but when I hit record I get an error saying to check the input or sample rates.
I'm using an Apple Powerbook if that helps any...
Any ideas? I'm in a bit of a cruch to convert this show for the band I recorded it for...
Any other software I can try? I'm used to stuff like Cool Edit Pro, I just want to be able to burn a CD of the show on my laptop!

Thanks in Advance,
David

I had the same problem(on 2 XP pcs).
I ended up completely reloading everything from scratch trying to determine the cause...
turns out the M-Audio firewire driver doesnt play nice with other audio drivers(or so it was in my case)

So, were you able to fix it?? Or am I screwed?
I can't imagine that there's just no hope...it's supposed to work with Macs...

OK...this may sound like a silly question: is your DAT recorded 16/44.1 or 16/48?

16/44.1 I checked that, trust me...that's why this is so confusing. The only thing I can think is the only drivers I installed were those for the Firewire...considering that's what I'm using, I thought it was enough...do I need other drivers for the Mac OS X? My problem is the error message I get with Audacity I shouldn't be getting...I can't fix what it says is wrong because I can't see that it's wrong...

Maybe uninstall all the drivers and reinstall with newest drivers from m-audio site?

I got your email about this.  Just about to respond when I saw this thread...

Have you tried any other apps?  Try the demo of Sound Studio at felttipsoftware.com and see if you get the same problem.  I've never used Audacity to record anything...

Yup...same problem with Sound Studio. The software sees the 410, I select it, hit record and nothing.
Someone help, I just need the firewire drivers right? Maybe I'll try M-Audio's site...the disc came with just the initial release drivers.

There's only one driver for OS X.  Definitely try updating to the latest.

Also, ensure you have the Apple Firewire Audio driver installed.  It's on Apple's website if you don't.

Got the new M-Audio driver...still nothing.
Went to apple's site for the new Firewire Audio and the only thing I see requires 10.3.3, I'm running 10.3.6 so it won't install!!
Where can I get just a normal firewire audio driver for the mac?

Ah that's right, they built it into 10.3.4 and higher.  What is this "normal firewire audio driver" you speak of?

Do you have the FW410 control panel running when you're trying to record the audio?  Always run that before you load up your recording software to ensure all of your settings are correct.  Also you shouldn't have to select the 410 in the System Preferences, only in the application you are using.

Are you doing a digital transfer?  Do you have the digital input turned on in the FW410 control panel?  When you start playing your DAT do you see any kind of level feedback in the FW410 control panel?

I have a feeling this is all a problem with your M-Audio Control panel settings, as the FW410 wouldn't even install if the drivers were not installed.

I don't know what a normal driver would be for the apple, I just didn't know where to look on my apple to see if I had a driver so I tried to update and the only update was specific to 10.3.3.

Keep in mind I've been a PC user all my life, and a Mac user for.....oh....4 months. I'm learning new things all the time.

It probably is something I'm not doing with the 410 control panel...When I start the DAT, I do get levels in the control panel. I'm trying a digital transfer to record from DAT to my HD.

Under the hardware tab I hit external sync source and coaxial spidf input.

I didn't change anything on Mixer or Output...do I need to change anything in level controller assignment? What about the buttons under the spdif in levels?

I've tried the manuals, but I can't find anything that just says "How to record to HD".

Thanks for the help so far...I hope this can be fixed!

What you need to do is ensure the coax input is being output on channels 1 and 2.  That's probably your problem.  I wish I could tell you exactly how to do this, but I no longer have a FW410 so I can't really do it in front of me.
