D8 would not record??
« on: July 13, 2006, 12:56:24 PM »
Hey,

I was runnin my rig last night and at the first set i tried to record, but after about two seconds the light on my DAT went out, it looked like it shut down briefly then it can back on but had stopped recording.  I tried repeately with the same results.  I threw in a new tape and all was fine.

Second set i needed another tape - tried again - same thing.  I gave up.

Bad DAT?

this is exactly why i ditched dat about 4 or so years ago, i had failed at recording about 6-8 times in a row and couldnt pull a tape to save my life, sold the d-8 and got a jb3 and all was good in the universe

i would say get it serviced if you want to continue using it

what brand of tapes ???

I always used the KAO golds til they were discontinued, then used the maxell HS-4's, in both 60 and 90 meters, i had good luck w/ those for the most part, but when heads go bad and get misaligned, all sorts of weird things start happening

I know - i think i may start taping with a laptop, but I'm kind of asking if you think its the D8 or the DAT itself.

I was using the maxell HS-4's with no problems.  The weird thing was i threw in an unpacked tape at the beginging of the show and it did that weird ...stop, power off, light off, came back on immediately thing - did it a few times as a repeatedly hit record - I tried a different tape and had no problem.  I went to use that tape for the second set and the problem came back.   Bad tape?

prolly a bad tape, i thought you tried 3 diff tapes, not the same one twice

recreate the problem at home and see if it was a bad tapoe

I'll bet the reels are tight and dragging on the tape in question.  The motor is trying too hard to turn the tape and dropping below operating voltage as it sucks more juice.  It shuts down then power can be restored.

DONT Unpack a new tape it just wears out your motors and the head!!
Yes, but what do you HEAR?

I have a R300 at home I use to unpack the tape before the show and I use it to transfer to pc.

My D8 only records - do you still say 'don't unpack'?
