apearent bit rate 24
« on: January 13, 2007, 04:53:39 AM »
ok, this is the first time i saw this and am a little confused.  first time taping w/ lappy - km140>ua-5>usb>wl5. afaik, the ua-5 doesn't do 24 bit and i had wl set to 16/48. everything tells me it's 16 bit, but when i ran global analysis to zero in on a couple clips at the start i noticed the 24 bit reading. never saw this before and the only thing different this time was going straight into wl. been running the same basic setup for over a yr.

not a major issue as everything else seems fine, just wondering if anyone else has seen this and why it'd report this?

the ua-5 certainly is capable of doing 24 bit.  on the back, if the ADV switch in "on", then the ua-5 will output 24 bit...
not sure what setting in WL you used when recording, but I'd venture to guess that you actually did record at 24 bit, and not 16/48.  how big is the recorded file?

according to wavelab:

properties: stereo 16 bit / 48.0khz

lenth: 50:30:150 / 581.788mb

same thing in cd wave

adv turned off on the ua-5.

Check the preferred resolution under the audio card tab.  It may be playing back at 24 by default (in which case you're actually seeing 16 bits plus 8 zeros)

are you doing any editing at all?  if so, and if you're internal bit depth is set to 24 bit or 32 bit, it'll say that that is the apparant bit depth.  under OPTIONS > PREFERENCES > FILE, you should see a pulldown box with the choices, "create 16 bit temporary files.  create 24 bit temporary files.  and create 32 bit float temporary files."

what is your set to?

32 bit float

i hadden't done anything w/ it at the time. i have saved it since after i fixed the clips i didn't cut out. i've used this prossess many times on transfers and never had 24 pop up. might have diiferent settings on the other machine though?

should i change it to 16 bit temp files? or does it make a difference?
