MOTU UltraLite and external L-Ion Batts?
« on: April 25, 2007, 09:46:51 PM »
anyone out here  using a MOTU
ultralite and or traveller
powered with a 9v or 12v Lithium Ion battery?

if so you get reccomendations?
how many mAH are you using and how long with Phantom does it last you?

I just got a MOTU Ultralite to replace my presonus firebox
so far I am much happier with the ultralite
not I just gotta rig up a battery pack

universal DVD battery?

direction to go?

thanx much!

Thanx for your reply
it's kinda weird
I really think the power specs on the MOTU site refer to the traveller
but they do mention the ultralite too
the DC (wall Wart) that came with it is 9vDC
and on the back it says 9vDC input tip either + or -

I have a 12v SLA batt but it's heavy as all get ouit!

I would rather not use NiCd  and woule prefer the Lithium Ion batts due to no memory effect

hey so I sent an email to motu suport about the possibility of
field powering it  -  the day before yesterday
but it took them 4 days to respond to my last tech support inquiry

the ultralite on the back states: 9v dc power center + or -
yet their info states 12v
there is also some stuff in the manual  that says if you are running a laptop on a battery, that the motu ultra lite will be bus powered and draining your laptop battery (exactly , thats what I am trying to avoid!   duh!)
doesn't mention battery power for the ultralite though

hopefully they will clear this one up soon

ok
so I sent MOTU an email on monday late nite
its friday and they have not responded yet
 .......Grrrrr
heres what it said:
hello
So I have my Ultralite
and its working very well
So far its great!

I would like to know more about field powering this unit ( where no AC power is available)
I have found the following on your site , However it looks like this response is more geared to the Traveller, but here's what you state:

As alternative to powering the Traveler via the FireWire bus or battery, or the UltraLite via the FireWire bus, you can use a DC adapter.

The Traveler or UltraLite needs a 12 watt DC power adapter. It can be of any polarity (tip positive or negative), and of any standard voltage from 10 to 24 volts. The easiest way to achieve 12 watts is to use a 12 volt, 1000 mA (1 A) power supply.

If you are using DC power with the Traveler make sure to turn the Traveler's "FireWire Bus Power Enable" switch to Off.

I am aware that EcoCharge makes a 12v SLA system for the Traveller
and the travelers back panel states a 12v supply
however, the Ultra lite is powered by 9v dc power supply either tip + or -
what I am wondering is that since it s wall wart is 9vdc is it possible to power the unit via a 9v battery?
I am looking into getting a 9v Lithium Ion battery (or 12v if needed)
currently I have a 12v Sealed Lead Acid  that I used to power many different interfaces in the field
but its darn heavy
so I am looking to switch to a Li-Ion battery to save some weight
can the ultralite be powered from a 9v
or will that only be limiting the length of use?

all this to also help conserve my battery power in my iBook, of course

'Taper420' had contacted MOTU about this around a year ago and posted the response he received here:
http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,64422.0.html

So, it looks like a 9v source will work.  I cannot really comment further b/c I always run mine on AC or bus power.

So will a Walmart DVD battery power this, then, provided it's the 9-volt flavor?  I don't know what the wattage requirements mean for this (excuse my ignorance about things electrical!).

but if you only bus power how long will your  laptop battery run it before both die?
thanx

I know I can use my SLA which will help
but really want something lighter

I don't use the Ultralite with a laptop, so I can't speak to that experience.  However, I've run mine several times with a 9v "walmart" type, but I eventually upgraded to a Batterygeek 14-18-118.  One of the 9v batts I have would not consistently power the thing, though the other would.  I also worried about the unit actually performing up to spec at that voltage, though I have no hard evidence to support that fear.  With the Batterygeek unit, though, all has been great and I can run the thing forever.  Not cheap but much better for my piece of mind.  Slightly larger and slightly heavier than a walmart-type, but not by much.  The 14v is probably overkill, but I plan on using it eventually with a DAV BG-1 and an inverter, so I'm going to have it for a while.  If it was *just* going to be for the Ultralite I'd probably stick with a 12v.

I've powered my ultralite for about 3 hours on a 9v wallmart nimh (the circle one). Can't remember if I had phantom on or not. Either way it wasn't long enough for me to try using in the field. I have a 12v sla belt with meter that I use. Never have to worry with that thing, even if I'm using the traveler. The 9v wouldn't power the traveler. It may have turned on for a second, but shut right off. One thing you could try if your using a laptop is using a 9v walmart until it runs out, then the bus power will kick in. This way you get the initial benefits of using the 9v, and don't have to worry about it dying. I've done this and it does switch over properly.
