Topic: What is a cheap option to get from 1/4-20 to 5/8"??

Hey there just looking for a cheap (preferably under $10) option to get my lightstand - http://www.amazon.com/Westcott-750-Photo-Basics-7-5-Foot/dp/B000NIKQ7Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1241789196&sr=8-1

to accept a 5/8" stereo t-bar. The lightstand has a 1/4-20 male stud on it now. Is there a cheap clamp or adapter that I can purchase to get this thing to work? I have found some out there for 20 bucks but I have a hard time believing that the adapter is going to cost me as much as the stand haha. I guess there is always duct-tape. Any suggestions are very much appreciated!

Not the cheapest option (though not terribly expensive in the grand scheme of things), but I think the best:

If your stand has a 5/8" stud (no threads) tip (some of which also include a 1/4"-20 thread on the end), consider a Bogen 5/8" stud | 3/8" male thread Rapidapter and a 3/8" > 5/8" thread adapter.  The Rapidapter makes for easy/swift on/off.

From the Amazon picture, it looks like your stand has a 5/8" stud + a 1/4"-20 tip, so this option should work.  A little over $10, but very convenient, IME.

There are adaptors that convert 1/4" to 3/8" and 3/8" to 5/8".   I've seen an all-in-one adaptor that covers all 3, but can't seem to find it.

Cheaper do it yourself method (I had a similar issue with 1/4" male thread)
- cut off the 1/4" male threaded part (easy, alumunim cut)
- drill 3/8" hole
- cut off bolt or buy a length of 3/8" threaded rod
- either tap 3/8" threads or just insert rod into hole and secure w/ side screw or something.
- finally, top with a 3/8->5/8 adaptor.

No, as pipe thread is very different than the pitch used for mic stands. You are looking for a 5/8-27 thread.

You need something like the micsupply adapter linked above or the TA1 from AEA/Wes Dooley. Current price is $12.50 so a little over your budget but it's my favorite adapter for going 1/4-20>5/8-27.

Depending on what t-bar you are using you may also need a locking ring/washer though my setup doesn't require one with TA1.

That looks just like the T-bar I have, if it is, it's a great one. 

Those are made by a company called On Stage. I think I pay like $4 ea for them as a dealer. Real cheap stuff, but it gets the job done.

I think the rapidaptor solution is the best.  You can leave it on your t-bar and setup is quick.  When you don't have to thread your stuff together in the field after arriving late, the extra couple of bucks for the quick set up more than pays for itself.

And for those, like me, finding themselves using wider spacing with a narrower included angle to maintain a desired SRA while reducing off-axis reverberant sound, a jam nut + a 2nd KM235 yields a wide, flexible mount.  The KM235s can be adjusted to allow for any width from coincident to full 16" (wider, depending on the shockmounts / mics / included angle).
